Default How to downgrade from 3.1.1 and get back to 3.0
    1. Download QuickFreedom software. (I used QuickFreedom 1.2 BETA. Found at http://quickfreedom.com/ or Here)

    2. Download iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11a_Restore Firmware and 3.0 (Found Here)

    3. Open Quick Freedom and do as followes:
    1. Install Libusb
    2. Browse for 2.1.1 Firmware
    3. Hit Next
    4. Uncheck Install Installer
    5. Hit Next
    6. Hit DFU Instructions and follow steps (It might take a few tries to put ipod into DFU mode. It should be just a black screen. If you have itunes on it, it is not in DFU mode.)

    4. When prompted hold shift and click restore in itunes - I used itunes 8.2.1.6

    5. Select your downloaded 2.1.1 Firmware

    6. Wait for ipod to restart after firmware install

    7. Hold shift and click restore in itunes

    8. Select the 3.0 firmware

    9. Re-Jailbreak with Redsn0w, if you choose to do so

As far as I know this is the only way to get back to 3.0 from 3.1.1 at this point in time.
    Hope this helps.

    I dont understand step 3.
Do you jailbreak the 2.2 firmware or the 3.0?

My ipod unfortunately had a booting problem so i had to restore it and stupid how i am i thought the newest firmware would be the best. I didnt think about lookin first if there exists a jailbreak...
And now i have a 3.1.1 unjailbroken device and cant even restore with 3.0...

I did exactly the same thing as you did. My ipod wouldnt boot and made the mistake of upgrading to 3.1.1.

You have to first load 2.1.1 firmware before you can update it again to 3.0. Don't know if it works with 2.2 firmware.

Default Can the downgrade be done without jailbreaking?
I was happy with the 3.0 and haven't jailbroken my phone, but the 3.1 is a disaster... tethering's gone, MMS is gone, but worse than that it's getting slower every day and I'm starting to miss my old dumbphone for its abilities to make calls and receive texts. Can I do this without jailbreaking?

I don't know if this will work for the phones as I havent got one.

This method of downgrading for the ipod touch doesn't jailbreak it. You have to re-jailbreak it after you have restored to 3.0.

i ran into the problem of getting the new 32 gig second gen, made me update to itunes 8 did all the steps everything went smooth until i used the new itunes 8 didnt let me load the custom ispw, error..so i downgraded to itunes 7. something now that itunes wont even reconize my touch any recomedations?

@ gary86 - I don't know if this will work for iphones or not as I havent got one. Otherwise I would have posted this in ipod touch and iphone forums.

@ josh3d2004 - I used the iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11a_Restore.ipsw firmware. Also at one point I had the problem with my ipod touch being detected as a phone. All I did was restore it through itunes to 3.1.1 origional software, by using shift + click in Itunes.

I don't know if having 3.1.1 pre-installed would make a difference. I doubt it though.

Also are you sure you are putting the phone into DFU mode properly? Quickfreedom should tell you when to restore through itunes.

@ minicooper07 - Try what I did. Look at the last post: Can't Connect to itunes after jailbreak
Just make sure you uninstall everything. That is what I failed to do first few tries.

dont waste time trying all new ipod that come with above firmware 3.1 cant be downgraded...
i tried all ways non can work...

I tried with the iphone 3G and it works. the difference is that 3GS has a digital compass, 1mpx more on the camera, and maybe a slightly better battery and processor.
the difference is not large, there is no reason not to work
plus both phones use the same software. So...

there is always one way to find out... and... that is to try...

try with iPod2,1_2.1.1_5H11a_Restore.ipsw, if u dont't know where to find it I'll send u a link...

    last row is for josh3d2004

    josh3d2004,
I'll try to find you a solution ..., I'll be back in few days.
