If you want to communicate with your iPhone - you'll need SSH in order to wirelessly communicate. Only needed if you're going to make mods outside of Installer. I use it just about everyday.

If you do decide to use it, there are millions of videos on it. Go to this website for some videos that show you how to use it with FileZilla (which is free)
    YouTube - iTouchMaster2's Channel

Go here to find some videos on how to SSH using WinScp (also free, Windows only)
    YouTube - iPodTouchHelper44's Channel
iPodTouchHelper44 - How to Install and Use WinSCP

    Hope I helped.

SSH is mostly used after you jailbreak your iPod.

It is how we access the files on the iPhone. Think of it as the way to set up a network between your iphone and a Mac or PC. File transfers, permissions changes are made possible this way.
