Default Despite Declining Profits, Samsung Beats Analyst Predictions for its March 2015 Quarter

Samsung recently provided investors with a new forecast for its March quarter sales that indicate earnings declined once again, likely falling roughly 30% from the same period a year ago. Even though the South Korean manufacturer appears to be facing continued losses, the projected earnings seem to be an improvement from the previous quarter where sales fell 36% in the fourth quarter of 2014 and a more shocking 60% in the quarter before that.

According to The New York Times, despite everything, the March frame represents the sixth consecutive quarter that Samsung sees declining sales. The company has been squeezed on the low-end spectrum by cheap Chinese smartphones while Apple’s premium iPhone lineup seems to have attacked Samsung from the high-end, both of which have caused Samsung to find itself in a weird situation.

With all of the numbers and happenings taken into account, the preliminary March quarter results seem to be better than analysts had expected, leading speculation (albeit being optimistic) towards Samsung possibly turning things around. To be more specific, the March results represent the three-month period prior to the launch of the new flagship S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Despite criticisms that compare the Galaxy S6 design to Apple’s iPhone and the more recent “bendgate” controversy, initial reviews for the Galaxy S6 tend to be quite positive with journalists claiming the new device is the best Android handset available on the market as of right now.

The South Korean manufacturer’s decline in the March quarter will contrast with Apple’s own earnings, which are due to be reported on April 27. Unsurprisingly, everyone believes that the March quarter will be another record breaking quarter for Apple which has been riding high on continued strong sales of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Recent data estimates suggest that Apple is on track to sell roughly 54 million iPhones in the just-concluded March quarter while bullish estimates go as high as 58 million units.

And all this despite a iPhone 6 and iPhone cloning. What will they do?
