Default Apple's Trade-in Program Not Hot Stuff in China

Apple devices may be hot commodities in China today, but the company's recently launched trade-in program has met a "lukewarm" response, according to published reports Wednesday.

As of Tuesday, Apple now lets consumers in China (via their 18 retail locations) trade in their used devices for credit toward the purchase of a newer device. But, as reports out of China confirm, the trade-in value for some devices have proven disappointing to Chinese consumers.

"The offered prices disappointed its fans as it pays only 1,500 yuan ($240) for an iPhone 5s, 500 yuan ($80) for an iPhone 4S, and 250 yuan ($40) for an iPhone 4," ZDNet explains. Consequently, it doesn't appear -- at least at this time -- that the new trade-in program is going to be a barn-burner sparking new sales of Apple products.

Of course, that doesn't mean that iDevice recycling isn't a lucrative business in China. "The trade-in prices [offered by Apple] are just a half of these offered by private recycling shops in China," the report notes. "Latest data shows a used 16G iPhone 4S is widely reclaimed at 1,100 yuan ($176) and 16G iPhone 5s is at 2,900 yuan ($463)."

Of course Apple will want to make more money off the phone they already made money off of.
