Default iOS 8.3 Beta Includes a Feature That Lets Users Download Free Apps Without a Password

A new feature has been spotted in a beta release of Apple's upcoming iOS 8.3 firmware update that allows users to enable or disable requiring an iTunes password when downloading free applications from Apple's App Store; the setting resides in the Settings application under the "iTunes & App Store" > "Password Settings" section. This is an option that is not present in iOS 8.2 or earlier.

First noted by 9to5Mac, this new feature would save a lot of time for those that like downloading free applications and/or games while out and about. Notably for security reasons, paid downloads from the App Store would still require a password due to the risks of accidentally downloading a paid application from the App Store and wasting money on the user's dime. This type of risk doesn't apply to free downloads.

The option is grayed out in the beta release screenshots, as shown above, but it is expected to become accessible by the final release of the iOS 8.3 firmware that is released to the public in the future.

The ability to download free applications from the iOS App Store without a password is a gripe that iOS users have had since the original launch of the App Store, so the sight of Apple finally giving users an option to get out of it illuminates their intentions to give users more flexibility in using their devices.

Can this feature be restricted requiring your iTunes password to enable or disable it?

I would love to download free apps without having to add a credit card to iTunes account just like in playstore.

I'm not sure about apps, but the play store makes you enter a credit card to get free music and movies.

    ......beware......

I've definitely downloaded free stuff from the App Store without entering a credit card? Not sure what you guys are talking about.
