Default Despite iPhone Sales Surge, 1 Billion Android Devices Shipped Last Year

Despite the record growth in sales of iOS-powered devices last year (not to mention the astounding fact that nearly 75 million iPhones were sold last quarter), Android devices continue to gain massive traction on a global scale.

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, Android accounted for 81 percent of all smartphones last year, shipping more than 1 billion units worldwide in a single year for the first time on record. Apple's share of the global smartphone OS market for the full year was just 15%.

All told, it's a massive accomplishment for the Android platform and a clear indicator that a competitive war remains between iOS and Android.

"Global smartphone shipments grew 30 percent annually from 1.0 billion units in 2013 to a record 1.3 billion in 2014," says Linda Sui, Director at Strategy Analytics. "Emerging markets, such as China and Indonesia, drove the industry's growth last year and they will continue to do so through 2015."

There's a reason for that. At my local supermarket there are currently at least 15 different versions of junk android phones available for less than $100. And that's just one place here in the US.

As android users famously said up until android market share tipped 50%: quantity does not equal quality.

    Just sayin

...and android phones are more affordable. They are not overpriced like apple is. IMO

As in any business, if you're not making enough money, you're not charging enough. Apple knows this rule as a single entity and just look at the results. Highest profit record in history.

I'm not sure Android vs. iOS is a smart comparison in regard to sales. That's like comparing the sale of individual Cheerios to the sale of doughnuts. They're both the same shape and they're both food but the difference in quantity and worth is extreme.

I just bought the blackberry passport and love it,like the shape of it you can see both ways equally unlike other phone shape when you turn to portrait or landscape mode you always get one side narrow and on side long.

I just did a quick search of iOS versus Android.

    - iOS has a TOTAL of 24 devices that it has ever run on.
    - In August 2014, Android had 18,796 'distinct' devices!!!

I'm surprised Android hadn't shipped 1 billion devices in 6 months w/ those numbers.

    5 - iPods
    6 - iPads

You try using one of those bargain android devices for a week and report back here with your results.

My bet.....you get frustrated by their performance and move on.
