Default Apple’s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus Lead to Significant Gains in Asian Markets

Recently published research shows Apple’s latest iPhone 6 and 6 Plus handsets led to significant gains in important Asian markets over the month of November. This included South Korea where the local tech giant, Samsung, saw product sales slow down compared to the usual pace. According to Counterpoint Research, the iPhone market share grew in Japan, China and South Korea for the month of November, mainly due to Apple’s new 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus “phablets.”

One thing that the results surprised many with was the fact that the biggest gains actually came from Samsung’s home country of South Korea, where the company has traditionally held a dominating position for years. Apple’s share of this specific market skyrocketed to 335, which more than doubled a 15% share prior to the launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. This boost in sales put Apple ahead of LG and in the second spot behind Samsung which saw its commanding market share drop from 60% to 46% over the same time period.

Counterpoint’s mobile devices research director, Tom Kang, had the following to say regarding the matter:

No foreign brand has gone beyond the 20% market share mark in the history of Korea's smartphone industry. It has always been dominated by the global smartphone leader, Samsung. But iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have made a difference here, denting the competition's phablet sales.
When it came to China, Counterpoint saw iPhone sales grow 45% year-over-year to land in Apple in third place with a 12% share. The finish was just behind Lenovo’s 13% and Xiaomi’s 18% market share. Samsung saw a declining interest for a 9% market share, dropping down to fourth place.

Last but not least, Apple performed expectedly well in Japan, taking an overwhelming 51% of the smartphone market in November. Sony managed to come in second place after earning a 17% slice of the market. It should be noted that Apple’s success comes just two years after it originally took the top spot in Japan back in 2012 when the iPhone ended the year with a 15% take of the entire mobile market according to a previous Counterpoint report.

The recent results from Counterpoint Research share the same findings from Kantar WorldPanel, which reported strong worldwide gains for Apple on high demand for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. More recently, Analysts at Morgan Stanley and UBS estimated that Apple moved roughly 67 million and 69 million iPhones worldwide during the fourth calendar quarter of 2014, breaking a record yet again. We’ll find out more when Apple has its earnings call on January 27th.

It most likely is 33% since the % sign is right above the number 5 on a keyboard.
