Default New Third-Party Head Units for Apple's CarPlay Unveiled by Pioneer and Kenwood

People who own the iPhone who are looking to make the most of Apple’s “iOS in the Car” initiative with CarPlay now have an increased number of choices as opposed to just buying a vehicle with a CarPlay system equipped. The choices are being made available thanks to Pioneer and Kenwood who have announced several new CarPlay-compatible replacement head units.

The folks over at Pioneer have brought three new models into their CarPlay lineup with the AVIC-8100NEX, AVIC-7100NEX and AVH-4100NEX. The second-generation NEX head units include external microphones for voice input as well as a wired remote to use with the built-in steering wheel controls and support for Google’s Android Auto. The AVIC-8100NEX touts a high-resolution 7-inch capacitive touchscreen while the AVIC-7100NEX and AVH-4100NEX ship with similar but resistive touch displays. All three of the units sport an HDMI input, wideband speech, A2DP AAC Bluetooth connectivity, HD Radio and dual-zone audio and video playback.

The price tags for the Pioneer units are as follows:

    • AVH-4100NEX: $700
    • AVIC-7100NEX: $1,200
    • AVIC-8100NEX: $1,400

Meanwhile, Kenwood also created its own unit to compete in the market. Its DDX99025 supports both CarPlay and Android Auto. Kenwood says the DDX99025 will ship with an MHL-supported HDMI port which will allow iPhone 5, 6 and 6 Plus owners to charge their device while in use. Features include Bluetooth Connectivity, HD Radio and SiriusXM alongside a “high-sensitivity touch screen.” Those who purchase the unit, will also have the option of adding a rear-view camera and factory steering wheel control integration.

Those of you interested in purchasing the Kenwood unit will have to wait for more details as pricing and availability information hasn’t been made available and instead just tout the infamous “soon” timeline.

Its good to see that third party suppliers support both Android and Apple, shame more car manufactures don't do the same, restricting buyers to one or the other makes buying a new car even harder

Lame Pioneer. $1400 for a capacitive screen? That's even crazier than I am.
They can have my jailbreak when they pry it from my cold dead fingers.

I haven't seen any other car headunit use anything but capacitive touchscreens, only reason is those screens have a matte finish to reduce glare from the sun while driving
