Default Iowa Looking to Create License App on the iPhone

Were you ever driving and needed your driverís license but then quickly realized you forgot it at home? Good news is that The Wall Street Journal has reported that Iowa is looking to make a smartphone app, which will show your license instead of needing a physical copy. If you live in Iowa, you may soon be hearing the words ďplease give me you iPhone and registrationĒ if you ever get pulled over. Bad news is that if you forget your phone and license at home, then youíre out of luck.

This all sounds great but DOTís Andrea Henry announced that concerns lie within privacy and security issues. When that gets the green light, they will actually proceed with the entire project. Henry stated:

Users could hold up the phone so that police or Transportation Security Administration officers can scan the license electronically, rather than handling the phone.
The reason behind this is so that someone wonít just show a screenshot picture of another personís license instead of the actual app and their own. Any notifications will also have to be disabled or hidden when the app is in use, so that officers wonít be able to access other private and confidential information including pictures, text messages, emails, and others. The company that is working with Iowa to develop the app is called MorphoTrust USA and it has been said that approximately 20 other states are in talks with the company for the same app.

Wow, Iowa could be leading the pack, here in the UK I don't even have a photo on my driving license, but then again it's not a legal requirement to carry my license with me even when driving.

This is great. If Apple Pay catches on huge, I might not need to lug around a wallet anymore.

I always have mine in my glove compartment. I memorized the license # to get around cops that wanna bust my chops :]

That's all fine until an officer drops your phone in a puddle.

I'm mostly concerned about the cops having access to the phone. They'll take it back to the car and who knows what they'll do with it - maybe flip through those private selfies you took!

Maybe once you launch the app you'll need a code or fingerprint to close it again.

Main prob I see is that would mean unlocking your phone and possibly incriminating your self in certain circumstances

Maybe it can be a Passbook card that's available from the Lockscreen.

I can almost guarantee this is where all IDs are going. Why would companies spend tons of money on resources when they could push things digitally. It's secure and economical.

What I'm a tell you a lot of people is not happy with that. And I live in Des Moines, Iowa. I would never give a Cop my phone without a court order no telling what they will do with your phone while they're running your information.

Hopefully, this won't be considered a legal I.D. for alcohol and tobacco.

Hopefully, this won't be considered a legal I.D. for alcohol and tobacco. It's bad enough dealing with the current fakes.

It says in the article that you don't hand the cop your phone -- you hold it up and they scan it.

Moreover, just don't download the app if you're concerned about it.

Which is why you NEED to jailbreak and install any of the plethora of apps available to protect specific apps with a passcode/fingerprint. If you have an iOS device and have not jailbroken it while having the opportunity to do so, you're messed up in the head and almost deserve to have your device perused through by whoever you handle it to or whomever happens to get a hold of it through whichever means. Do yourself a favor and protect your sh*t with a jailbreak, people.

This is the only circumstance I'd do this.

Only in Iowa, just think of the jailbreak apps on this one for a fake ID

I actually don't think that'd work. I believe it has something to scan which pulls up the police database file. Can't hack that.

I like this idea myself, if they could implement a ID from the Passbook that works with your Touch ID. But then again I also have a Jailbroken iPhone so this doesn't matter, but still it's a Cool Idea so I'll be looking forward to this being implemented.

I don't want any officer handling my cell phone period! This should just be a viable option for the driver, if they happen to have their phone with them and not their physical license then fine.
