Default Apple May be Releasing a Smaller 4-inch iPhone in 2015

It’s only been a few months since Apple released its iPhone 6 lineup devices, but rumors are already circulating saying that a 4-inch iPhone will be released next year. This is fairly surprising news as we all know the trend currently is the bigger the smartphone, the better. However, news comes from G for Games citing Asian sources, saying that the lineup will include a smaller 4-inch model. Apparently, the reason behind a smaller device is to bring back the one-hand usage of the iPhone those who preferred it. If you currently own one of Apple’s newest smartphones, you would know that using just one hand for the phone is a bit tough.

Sources are saying that the second half of 2015 may mark when the smaller 4-inch iPhone 6 may be released and will be used to target female consumers. Recent news claimed that the lower end iPhone 5c will be discontinued at some point in 2015. But even with the release of a 4-inch device the iPhone 5s will apparently still exist in the lineup, making the 5s Apple’s lower-end smartphone. You may be wondering how true this rumor is, and we can only suggest taking everything with a grain a salt. It is unclear as to how the track record for these Asian sources have been in the past, so we wouldn’t believe everything you hear until more proof is released.

We will let you guys know when more news in regards to this claim is announced. Would you prefer the smaller 4-inch iPhone? Let us know in the comments below.

Why would they release a smaller iPhone 6 at the second half of 2015? At that point just make a smaller 7...

Will be good because 4 inch is ideal for a phone, biggers are not phones tablets for me. But the very important thing is to increase the ram, 1GB is not enough and 6 line users suffer webkit problems...

Hope they do .... much prefer the size of the original to the 6. If they can get it as thin I'll be selling my 6 to get one :-)

6+ is just too big for me and now I wish I would have just gone with the 6. Loved the iphone5, it was the perfect size for a phone.

Maybe there are a lot of us nearsighted folks out there who neither want nor need a bigger phone.

I'm sure whatever Apple does, they've done plenty of market research. If the need is there, they'll want to fill it sooner rather than later.

I wasn't questioning making a smaller phone, just the point of releasing a smaller 6 with the 7 coming out just a month or two later.

And please release a 2.5" in 2016. Why would they?

Probably the 6S if history of refresh cycle is any indicator.

Good point. Filling a line up with models to address a wide range of needs like one-handed use seems very wise if demand remains strong. Why limit your market only to people that want a large phone? My i6 is great but my wife is very hesitant to upgrade her 5 because she likes one-handed use so much. Having a 4 inch screen in the line up basically addresses this issue and would seem to ensure they continue capturing this market base. They clearly lost buyers that wanted larger phones until the 6 came out. Kinda silly to swing the pendulum so far that you lose folks who want to keep a more diminutive form factor.

That's the problem, Apple is now just chasing after whatever the public thinks it wants. Steve Jobs and other great business leaders understood what the public would want before they created their product.

It's been less than three months since the 6 came out. They may be planning to debut a smaller 6 along with the AppleWatch. (I really think they should have named it the iWatch, but what do I know? LOL)

I don't see that as the case at all. Steve Jobs didn't think the public wanted a large phone or a tablet device, yet here we are today with larger phones and tablets. Maybe Apple realized there is a niche for the Steve Jobs types out there, like me, who simply want a small handheld device. Or maybe they planned this all along, but didn't want to overdo it why debuting three sizes all at once instead of two.

I can't speak for everyone, but for me the 6 is pretty much where I need to be. Maybe something in between the 5 and 6 screen size would be absolute perfection. I got a 6+ too, just because... well, just because I could, basically. They were in stock. Serves more as an iPad mini for me. Entirely too big to be useful as a phone - especially with no real iOS optimizations to utilize (justify?) the girth.

My wife? Still holding onto her 5 because of the size. She really wants the Touch ID now and everything, and is considering the 5S - just to stay at that size (or looking at different phones altogether). Took her to go get her a 6, and she flat-out said no. Let her use it for a week while I put in some work with the 6+... Too big. And she's hardly alone: out of all of her friends and coworkers who use iPhones, very few made the jump to the newer devices, mostly due to size. Smaller hands, easier to text... even manipulating the camera for those stupid selfies plays a part. (smh)

So yes, I can see it happening. Doubt it, but wouldn't be surprised.

What would they call it? The 6 mini?

What about the battery? The 6's battery is on par with the 5S' battery (maybe a hair better), so a 6 mini's would have to be smaller, no? What kind of a drop would there be - can't see a gain there. (and if there WERE a gain there, then Apple would have some explaining to do to iPhone 6 owners.)

Agreed! My wife doesn't want a phone bigger than the 5/5S. I'm kind of on the fence about the size of the 6, but would like to stick with the 4" screen myself.

Apple needs to recognize that, like the larger screen market, there is still a market for smaller phones. Android makers seem to be fine with plugging that with junky budget phones. If Apple can make a 4" phone with the same or at least close specs to it's best phones, they wil lcapture more people from Android.

The iPhone 6S- or the iPhone 7-

@ChicagoV: I highly recommend the 5S for your wife. I bought mine just after the 6's debuted, and the 5S prices dropped. What a deal!
As for the touch id, I think it's great, especially using the iTouchSecure jb app. I had the sliding fingerprint type reader on a notebook once, and it sucked. Apple's approach is the only way to go. My skin is very dry, so I have to use moisturizer on my hands, especially in the wintertime. I never knew from one day to the next whether the sliding fingerprint reader would work or not, so I finally gave up on it.

One tip for her (and you too maybe): Record only one print at a time. Since humidity and other factors change the print image, record the same fingerprint again when the first one has trouble. If your wife uses hand cream like I do, her print will change as her fingers slowly dry out over several hours.

I believe Samsung uses the sliding fingerprint technique that my notebook did. I wouldn't go for that ever again. Not only is it unreliable, but you cannot open a phone with one hand that way. (Maybe somebody out there can, but I wouldn't bother even trying.) The iPhone's sensor is perfect for one-handed use.

Good luck with whatever you two decide!
