Thread: Apple is Still Signing iOS 8.1, Last Chance to Downgrade/Restore & Jailbreak

Is this the longest the signing window has ever been left open?

Just restored my sons ip5 from 8.1.1 to 8.1, so still signing.

I've been updating all of our iOS 7 devices to 8.1 all morning.

Definitely seems like the longest they've ever continued to sign previous firmwares after a new update... That would be so rad if they let that signing window stay open indefintely...

Does it matter what version of iTunes (12?) to install 8.1? I'm looking to downgrade to 8.1.

^ That should work. 12.0.1 is the latest version.

How do I know exactly which firmware to download? It said it something about incorrect firmware.

Download, then hold 'shift' ,click 'restore' point to the firmware you downloaded.

That's what I was doing (except for Mac version)...it says "could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible."

I've tried two different files so far for this ipad 2 (1_7.1.1_11D201 & 1_8.1.1_12B435).

I also tried 4_8.1.1_12B435...these are the files names shown once downloaded.

So my question is, from the link listed, how to know which firmware to DL for this ipad 2?

In some regards, it makes sense for Apple to not stop signing the older version.

If you consider that jailbreaks provide wide exposure to security issues, it might make sense to patch those issues in minor updates but still sign the underlying major update for the jailbreak users. Win-win - those that want to jailbreak can, and those that don't want jailbreak but want security can take the minor update.

For the jailbreak community, this means that unused exploits aren't wasted on minor releases like 8.1.1, but will be reserved for 8.2 or 9.0.

It'd be awesome if this was an official nod to the jailbreak community in trying to offer best of both worlds to both types of customers.

I appreciate the link from blkcadi and image of links from iYeow....but neither tells me exactly which is the correct firmware to download. I have tried five different versions of firmware for ipad 2. All have resulted in saying the firmware file is incompatible.
    Any other help?

Perhaps use this to make certain what model you have. Identify your iPad model - Apple Support
Then you can make sure you have the correct firmware.

It was in dfu mode, I'm restoring it now on 8.1.1 just to get the model specs (it's not mine). Then I will post details.

You should be able to identify it by the model number on the back of the device.

  19. #76
That would be too easy....it shows model A1416

    iPad (3rd generation)

    A1416 on the iPad (3rd generation) Wi-Fi

    This is the correct firmware.

Thanx blkcadi, downloading 12B435 now. He told me it was an iPad 2 and I assumed it was correct.
