Default Facebook Launches 'Safety Check' So You Can Share if You're Safe From Natural Disasters

When natural disasters, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis devastate lives each year, the one thing you can count on thinking about is whether or not your friends and family in those areas are safe.

Facebook is introducing a new solution for the fear of your friends or family being hurt by natural disasters with a new feature called Safety Check. With this feature, whenever a disaster strikes a location that you're close to, Facebook will ask you whether or not you're safe, and it will allow the answer to be shared with your friends and family.

You will also be able to check up on any of your other friends and family that might be affected by the disaster, and you will be able to mark your friends as safe too.

The feature uses your location in order to tell if you're in the middle of a natural disaster or not. If you are, you should receive a notification like the one below where you can enter the Facebook application and update your status:

You can watch the feature in action in Facebook's demonstration video below:

Whenever I see a new 'feature' from Facebook, my cynical side takes over and assumes this is just another angle to allow Facebook to mine more personal data, and how they will benefit (profit) from it. This is no different.

While normally I'm with you, it doesn't appear to use any permissions besides location, which they already get. The only thing I can see them doing with this is promotionals like, "Last year we alerted over 5,000 users of potential natural disasters and over 100,000 users of the condition of those involved! Sign up to stay safe an informed today!"

    ......beware......

I think this is very slick... with the presence FB already has with so many people around the globe, this could be a very useful tool to put loved one's minds at ease. I like it!
