Default Microsoft Updates Skype Messaging App for iPhone With iOS 8 Support and New Features

On Monday, Microsoft updated its Skype application for the iPhone bringing it up to version 5.5 in the iOS App Store. This is a major update and one of the largest updates since the version 5.0 re-design back in June.

Skype 5.5 brings with it official support for iOS 8, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. In addition to the support for the various features in iOS 8, perhaps one of the most important additions in this update is the support for Interactive Notifications.

With Interactive Notifications, you can actually perform actions right from the notification banner without having to leave the application that you're currently inside of. For example, if you're multi-tasking and reading a Web page, but you're also messaging a friend with Skype, you can now reply to the message from a notification banner without leaving the Web page. It works very similarly to Apple's quick reply functionality from the Messages application.

Interactive Notifications with Skype will work with incoming phone calls, incoming messages, and more all from the banner notification:

For incoming video calls swipe left on the notification to answer with voice or video.
For missed voice and video calls swipe left on the notification to call back or send a message.

    From a banner notification:
For incoming voice calls pull down on the notification to answer or decline.
For incoming video calls pull down on the notification to answer with voice or video.
For missed calls pull down on the notification to call back or send a message.

For new messages swipe left on the notification to reply.

In addition to these updates, Skype has added some bug fixes and general improvements around the application to help make it more stable and reliable.

Existing users of the Skype application for iPhone will find this update for free under the Updates tab in the App Store application. Alternatively, you can download the latest version of Skype for iPhone for free from this App Store link.

Does this work only on iOS 8?
