Default TIME: Apple's Sapphire Plans Misunderstood

Beginning just days after last year's launch of Apple's iPhone 5s, speculation mounted that Apple was ramping up production of sapphire to introduce the material for what would become Apple's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

As it turns out, the tech news business got it all wrong. Tim Bajarin, the president of Creative Strategies Inc., explains in his latest column that any anticipated deployment of a sapphire cover for iPhone 6 was misguided.

Delving into everything from design to battery life, it was likely cost that put the final nail in the coffin for a sapphire cover for Apple's iPhone.

"The cost to produce a sheet of sapphire is estimated to be roughly 10 times that of strengthened glass," Bajarin writes. "In fact, one source I talked to said that cost could be even higher. Our researched opinion early on was that if Apple did add a sapphire screen to the new iPhone, it would add at least $100 to the base cost. That could be a deal-breaker for mainstream iPhone customers."

Of course, none of this is news to Apple. All along, we're told, Apple knew what it was doing -- escalating production of sapphire for eventual deployment in Apple Watch and Touch ID sensors that are quickly becoming an established feature across the iDevice lineup (Touch ID is expected to come to iPad Air and iPad mini this fall).

Money is "in the comeback" What business wants to make something virtually scratch/shatter proof? Where is the money in that? haha!

So a screen that's practically scratch proof and crack proof. I'd pay an extra $100.

$100 for a scratch proof, crack proof phone, or $99 for AppleCare with $50 deductible how many times?

(And don't say screen protector, I use, they don't prevent drop issues)

Yes, it would be less expensive for me to pay upfront and be done!
