Default Apple Officially Rolls Out iOS 8 to the Public

Jailbreakers are advised to steer clear of this update for now.

Apple has started rolling out iOS 8, Apple's next major step up for the operating system on Apple's mobile devices, to the public Wednesday afternoon. The software has been in developer-only beta testing since the Summer.

iOS 8 comes with a myriad of new features that will set it apart from iOS 7. It will come pre-installed on every iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, but those that are updating the firmware on their existing iOS 7 devices will find this update both through iTunes and OTA (over the air) from the Settings > General > Software Update option.

If you need a quick recap on what iOS 8 will give you:

    • QuickType – a new, smarter keyboard that can guess what you're trying to say before you say it
    • Quick Reply – a new quick reply interface for replying to incoming notifications without leaving the app you're in
    • Voice Messages – a new way to send voice messages via the Messages app when you need to be hands-free
    • SpotLight – a new and improved SpotLight with Web results built right into the interface
    • Photos – a better Photos application with better photo sorting and searching
    • Contact Shortcuts – contacts are now built into your App Switcher for faster access across the board
    • Mail – Your Mail application has been improved with several new features, including flagging
    • Family Sharing – a new way to share iTunes content with your household
    • iCloud Drive – a new and improved cloud experience where you can work on files directly from iCloud
    • Health – a new application for tracking and monitoring your health
    • SMS and Phone calls – you can now answer SMS and Phone calls on all of your non-iPhone iOS 8 devices
    • Continuity – pick up on another iOS device where you leave off on a different iOS device
    • Native applications – Podcasts and iBooks are now native with the iOS 8 operating system
    • Tips – a new application for teaching you how to use the new features on your iOS 8 device
    • Metal – a brand new gaming engine for developers to write awesome, graphics-intense games
    • Third-party keyboards – iOS 8 allows third-party developers to release their own keyboards for users
    • Touch ID for Developers – third-party developers can now tap into the power of Touch ID for their apps
    • Real-time Siri dictation – Siri dictate will type out what you're saying in real time
    • Siri – Siri has been improved to be much smarter and understand your voice better
    • Wi-Fi calling – you can now make phone calls over Wi-Fi when cellular service is unavailable
    • Time Lapse Photography – you can now take advantage of time lapse photography from the Camera application
    • The Weather Channel – weather information is now grabbed from The Weather Channel instead of Yahoo!
    • Display Capture – iOS 8 allows you to record your iOS 8 device's display with a Mac using QuickTime
    • and MUCH more!

We polled you guys to find out how many of you will be upgrading to iOS 8 and how many of you will be sticking with jailbroken iOS 7. Most of you say that you're going to stay with your jailbroken iOS 7 installation (don't worry, we will be too!)

Don't forget that iOS 8 cannot be jailbroken, so if you're planning on upgrading, you will lose your jailbreak until (and if) an iOS 8 jailbreak is released to the public. We suggest waiting to upgrade if you're using a jailbroken iOS 7 device and you value your jailbreak!

Please note that iOS 8 drops support for the iPhone 4, and will only run on the following devices:

    • iPhone 4s
    • iPhone 5
    • iPhone 5c
    • iPhone 5s
    • iPhone 6
    • iPhone 6 Plus
    • iPod touch 5th generation
    • iPad 2
    • iPad with retina display
    • iPad Air
    • iPad Mini
    • iPad Mini with retina display

I think I'll keep my iPhone 5 jailbroken on iOS7. Only have to wait 2 days for iPhone 6 with iOS 8.

Can't wait to download and install it after work (or when it so decides to be done downloading due to the high traffic of course).

Does anyone else have problems with notifications not going away on their own but staying at the top of the screen unless you dismiss them?

I really don't care for losing the Jail break, downloading ISO 8 right now.

  17. #17
The only reason I would really care to have iOS 8 is to install 3rd party keyboards....but why couldn't we just install the keyboards that swype, swiftkey, etc. release on IOS 7 and if that's not possible could someone not modify it to work on IOS 7 jailbreak?

I'm on iOS 8 beta 5 on a Verizon iPhone 5s. If I put my phone into restore mode will it prompt me to update to iOS 8 public or will it get my phone stuck on this beta? Can anyone answer this question for me please?

Any estimates on when the iOS 7 signing window will close? I've been swamped all week and haven't had time to restore.

    ......beware......
