Default Apple Makes the New iPhones One-Hand Friendly Despite The Larger Sizes

With the iPhone being launched in the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus variant alongside the regular iPhone 6, Apple didn’t forget to include some special user interface tweaks to consumers with managing the added real estate. For those of you who didn’t know, Apple’s iPhone has always been designed to facilitate one-handed use. With the new 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models set to release next week, the company had to make both hardware and software modifications to keep the larger iPhones user friendly.

One of the more obvious tweaks made to accommodate the size change is a relocated sleep/wake button, which moved from the top right of the device to the right hand edge. The button can now be reached without forcing a change in the grip of the iPhone. Both the iPhone 6 and the 6 Plus also have special gesture support in iOS 8 called Reachability. The trick is a double-tap on the Touch ID-equipped home button, which will move the user interface down closer to the thumb. Coupled with the swipe gestures, this should make the iPhone easier to use with one hand despite its larger size. Furthermore, it should be noted that the Reachability feature is one that is built into iOS 8, allowing it to work well with third-party apps just as well as it does with Apple’s own software.

Last but not least, in an effort to help with size adjustments, the Cupertino California company also included what it calls a “desktop scaler” to correctly render webpages and other content on-screen without requiring intervention from developers. This was shown at the keynote by Schiller who pulled up The Wall Street Journal as an example, a site which was not optimized for the iPhone 5S, 6 and 6 Plus, showcasing that it ended up being sized well for each device thanks to the feature.

Are those of you who normally prefer smaller sized phones still interested in the new iPhones thanks to Apple’s adjustments or is the large size still a turn off?

If a double click moves the apps down for 'reachability' in ios8, what activates the app switcher?

I didn't see the desktop scaler and I thought I saw every part of the keynote?

To activate Reachability you tap the button twice but you don't press it all the way.

    double-tap not double-click.

It's not a click. You touch twice the sensor. The ring around the sensor senses the finger, activating the Touch ID to read your finger. Essentially, you'll be activating your Touch ID sensor twice with two quick taps on the ring, thus activating the reachability.

It's double tap not click you double click to advocate the app switcher by physically pushing in the button than to tap the finger print sensor home screen button

I'm going to be that lone voice crying in the wilderness...

They're nice phones, but I wish they'd made one smaller. Just as an option for us weirdos and odd-balls that don't want to carry a small TV screen around with us. An 'iPhone 6 minus' option would have been cute.

I'll Jailbreak it and use Activator to access a different gesture.
