Default 'ConvoProtect' Can be Used to Protect Conversations in Messages, WhatsApp, and Kik

If you're a user of Apple's Messages application, or even third-party messaging applications like WhatsApp or Kik, then you could benefit from a new jailbreak tweak called ConvoProtect by iOS developer Noah Saso.

ConvoProtect will give you some added security in these messaging applications by allowing you to lock them down on a per-conversation basis, and even hide the text from them. Doing this will prevent unwanted eyes from reading your text messages, and the flexibility that the tweak gives you is unmatched by free alternatives such as PrivateSMS7.

For example, you can see above how we have password protected one of our conversations, and when we go to enter the conversation, we are presented with an alert that requests a password from us to get through to the conversation. Obviously, if you don't know the password, then you will not be allowed access to that particular conversation.

You can also hide the preview from the message thread view, and do other things with ConvoProtect. You can configure everything that you can do from the extensive preferences pane in the Settings application, which is shown below:

From here, you can enable or disable the entire tweak on demand, enable or disable an automatic accept for when you enter your password without having to tap enter, and enable or disable a number keypad for the password. You will also find a selection box for when to hide text message content from thread view.

Next section down, you can configure what will be locked in any of your applications. We only utilized the Messages application for this review, so we'll take you through how to use that section. When you tap on the "Locked Numbers" cell, you'll be able to add phone numbers of people that you want to lock the conversations of in the Messages application. You will need to include your country code, as well as the area code for this to work. The interface looks like the one below, in which you will be able to add phone numbers manually, or import existing contacts:

Once you set that up, you'll also have to configure a password for unlocking the conversation in the Messages application.

From the next section down in the main preferences pane, you will find options for locking groups in the various applications and setting a password for protecting groups as well.

Below this, you'll find a way to use Activator to toggle the tweak's functionality on or off without having to enter the ConvoProtect preferences pane in the Settings application – this is handy for when you don't want to enter your password to enter the preferences pane.

Under the Activator section, you'll be able to control hidden conversations and hidden groups from any of your applications.

Last but not least, the bottom of the preferences pane houses a place to put your own password for unlocking the preferences pane in case you want to password protect the preferences pane to keep unwanted hands from going in and editing your security settings.

ConvoProtect is a very solid way to protect your conversations from getting compromised by unwanted eyes. It can help protect you from a spoiled birthday surprise, or even prevent other people from learning special secrets about you that you don't want them to know. Since your passwords are encrypted, you can be sure that they're being stored securely on your device.

The developer has a lot of awesome updates to come, including Touch ID unlocking and a completely re-designed preferences pane with better organization for the options. We've gotten a sneak peek of the updated preferences pane from the developer, which you can see below:

If you want to give ConvoProtect a try, it's available in Cydia's BigBoss repository for $1.99. The tweak requires iOS 7 to be installed. Activator, WhatsApp, and Kik are all optional and not required, as the tweak works just fine with the stock messages application.

No, it's intended for Messages, WhatsApp, or Kik.

You may be able to request biteSMS from the developer, as he has every intention of adding support for more applications in the future. If you think this is something you would like to have for biteSMS, I would recommend e-mailing him in Cydia.
