Default New Insight as to Why Apple is Hiring Talent from Nuance

Apple is up to something. But what?

Nuance, a familiar name around Apple headquarters due to the company's integral role in the development of Siri, has reportedly been shedding talent in recent months to Apple.

So, does this move foreshadow Apple's long-rumored plans to acquire Nuance? Not exactly. Freshly published inside chatter and subsequent speculation indicates that Apple wants to move away from Nuance's technology and put in its place a new and improved system that is faster and calls up more accurate results.

“Apple is not hiring only in the managerial level, but hiring also people on the team-leading level and the researcher level,” Abdel-rahman Mohamed, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Toronto, tells Wired in a new interview this week. “They’re building a very strong team for speech recognition research.”

For Siri to grow and thrive, sources say, it has to evolve well beyond being just a speech recognition solution. Apple apparently knows this and is bolstering its team and resources to improve Siri dramatically in the coming years.

I'd be ticked at Apple for poaching if I was Nuance. Most corps have anti-poaching agreements with partners to prevent souring the relationship. And if Apple was going to buy Nuance, why leave and miss out on a great buyout program?
