Thread: Five Reasons You Should Update to iOS 7.1.2 and Jailbreak With Pangu Today

Default Five Reasons You Should Update to iOS 7.1.2 and Jailbreak With Pangu Today

iOS 7.1.2 was released on Monday to fix some small bugs in Apple's mobile operating system for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, and luckily, the latest version of the popular Pangu jailbreak for iOS 7.1 and later was not patched in iOS 7.1.2.

If you're running any version of iOS other than iOS 7.1.2, here are five reasons you should consider updating to iOS 7.1.2 and re-jailbreaking with the latest version of Pangu today!

    1. It's the Latest and Most Stable Jailbreakable Firmware

With iOS 7.1.2 being the latest firmware from Apple, it's also the most stable. It has included all of the latest security and bug fixes from Apple, and it can still be jailbroken, so you get to enjoy the best of both worlds by updating to iOS 7.1.2 and jailbreaking it.

    2. Better Performance and Battery Life

Along with squashing a ton of bugs and improving security, Apple has also fine-tuned the software to make it run much smoother and more efficiently. A big part of the fine-tuning that Apple included in the latest software for their mobile devices is improved battery life. Huge battery life gains were discovered in iOS 7.1.1 and later back in April, when iOS 7.1.1 went live to the public. By updating to the latest firmware, you'll get to enjoy your jailbreak for longer periods of time throughout the day thanks to a nice boost in battery life.

    3. Developers Are Starting to Make Tweaks Compatible with iOS 7.1.x

Now that everyone is jumping on board with iOS 7.1.2, developers will start developing tweaks for compatibility with the latest jailbreakable firmware. iOS 7.1 and later all have some user interface and under-the-hood changes that will make supporting legacy firmwares harder, so jumping on board with the latest firmware yourselves is the best way to make sure you're moving at the same speed as the developers that bring us these great jailbreak tweaks and to make sure you'll be able to install them.

    4. Pangu is Now in English and Available for BOTH Mac OS X and Windows

The initial release of Pangu was a little bumpy (but still worked fine) the tool was not in English, it defaulted to installing a third-party piracy store along with Cydia, and it was a Windows-only jailbreak. The most recent release of Pangu (version 1.1.0) finally supports English, removes the third-party piracy store option completely for English users, and best of all it adds official support for Mac OS X in addition to Windows. With the nicely cleaned-up interface and additional support for more operating systems, the tool is now a breeze to use and makes right now a good time to get started.

    5. Get There Before Apple Releases a New Software Update That Patches Pangu

It's not very likely that Apple will release another software update for iOS 7 prior to the iOS 8 release this Fall, but there's always the chance that the company could choose to patch the Pangu jailbreak in a future software update. With that being said, it would be wise to get there while you still can. When Apple releases iOS 8 to the public this Fall, there will no longer be a way for you to get to iOS 7.1.2, so if you're having any problems with your current software that can be fixed with a restore, now is a great time to get that done and over with.

For everything that you need to know about how to jailbreak your iOS 7.1.x device, you can follow our Mac OS X and Windows guide at this link.

I'm on 7.1.1. I really don't feel like restoring, updating, jailbreaking, and reinstalling all my stuff from Cydia. Is 7.1.2 really that much better than 7.1.1?

Thanks for the info! The only question I had was if the battery was better than 7.0.6 or 7.1.1. I heard all the 7.1 firmware battery lives were pretty darn bad.

    Personally, I would.

The mail encryption bug that's fixed is a big one IMO. It's also the reason I waited to go from 7.0.6 to 7.1.2 since we knew that 7.1.2 wouldn't patch the Jailbreak. Patience paid off!

I did this today and I used OpenBackup which others suggested.. problem is openbackup did not work ... fortunately I backed up the openbackup bckup.txt file that had the list of installed packages.. so I would recommend the following..

    1. Install OpenBackup and back up your device and if you can, use iexplorer ( or whatever ) to download openbackup's backup files ( recommended!!!! )
    2. Back up with iTunes
    3. Restore to 7.1.2
    4. Restore from iTunes
    5. Jailbreak
    6. Install OpenBackup with Cydia again
    7. Try the restore ... if it works, you're good .. if not continue and DO NOT REBOOT yet.. openbackup overwrites on reboot by default
    8. Install openssh
    9. Use something like putty to get into your idevice with shell
    10. Type the following commands:

    cd /var/mobile/Library/Preferences/OpenBackupFiles ( ENTER )
    for i in `cat bckup.txt`;do apt-get -y install $i; done ( ENTER )
    reboot ( ENTER )

    Explanation:

Command 1 changes into the folder that contains your openbackup data
Command 2 loops through every package in the bckup.txt log and installs it with the -y switch which automatically answers yes to every question.. after a few minutes it will be completed.
    Command 3 reboots the device

If all went well you should be back to where you were! .. if you get put into safemode you will have to go into cydia and selectively delete tweaks until you find which one is causing problems.. in my case it was Intelliscreen X .. ( bummer ) ..

I hope this is useful to some..

    2. Back up with iTunes
    3. Restore to 7.1.2
    4. Restore from iTunes
    5. Jailbreak
    6. Install OpenBackup with Cydia again
    7. Try the restore ... if it works, you're good.. if not lets HOPE you downoaded that bckup.txt file.. restore that file to it's original location via iexplorer ( or whateover ) manually
    8. Install openssh
    9. Use something like putty to get into your idevice with ssh shell
    10. Type the following commands:

Updated to clarify a bit about restoring the bckup.txt file... if Openbackup does not work for you, you will HAVE to restore your original one that you backed up if you didn't disable the backup on reboot option in settings..

The comments on modmyi.com confuse the heck out of me so I'm reposting this ..

Why can't these jailbreaks work for an Apple TV also? I just dropped $175 on a 2nd gen so I'd even pay for a jailbreak if it were available for newer ones.

you can read about the updates here...

    iOS 7.1.2

    and the security updates here...

About the security content of iOS 7.1.2

... and then decide if it's worth your troubles updating to 7.1.2. i updated my iPhone 5s earlier today without any issues.

My i5 has been running like crap lately so I don't even care if cydia is slow. I'm sure updates will be available ASAP.

Has anybody used Pangu on Windows 8.1? I downloaded Pangu, but when I attempt to open it I receive a message saying "This app can't be run on your PC" I have tried running in adminstrator mode and received the same result.

    PROBLEM SOLVED:
Turns out that even though Chrome said the download was complete, on checking the file size, it was actually not. Took 4 tries, but I eventually got a complete file sized at ~35 MB. Hope this ends up helping anybody that may be experiencing this problem as well.

Just used Pangu and no cydia icon, what do I do?

Just looked it up. Make sure to set auto lock to never. Remove pass codes. Set date to June 2nd 2014 before you start Pangu.

Still no cydia icon after following all steps. FAIL.

I'm also with tmobile with i5 with updated carrier settings. Restored twice and waiting to try pangs again for the 3rd time. This is annoying.

Try a DFU restore, & make sure before you start the jailbreak you set the date back to June 2nd & do not have a pass code & have auto lock set to never.

My iPhone 5 is on 7.1.2, is faster than on 7.0.6, & I had only one issue with the JB (same one I had with evasi0n where all my JB apps disappeared. Deleting a plist file fixed that).

Of course I never restore from a backup & always DFU restore & setup the phone as new. Then I manually re-setup my phone.
