Default 'MapStep' Pauses Media When Your Apple Maps Attempt to Announce Directions

If you use Apple's Maps to help provide you with navigation directions while driving, and you have music or some other kind of media playing in the background, then you might be disturbed at how Apple's Maps are programmed to lower the volume of your playing media for the duration that the Maps are trying to talk to you. After the Maps are done talking to you, the media volume returns to normal, and you've already missed anywhere from 5 to 15 seconds of your media playback.

A new free jailbreak tweak called MapStep by iOS developer sharedRoutine is now available in Cydia to fix this problem by actually pausing any media that might be playing in the background before your Maps speak, and then when your Maps are done speaking to you, your background media will resume playing.

The idea behind this tweak is to make it so that you can still easily hear your Maps, but also make it so that you aren't missing any bit of the media that you're playing. It makes sure to pause your media before announcing navigation instructions, and then continues playing again once the navigation instructions are done.

The developer notes that the tweak works with any kind of media, including music, videos, Podcasts, and more. The developer may also consider adding support for Google Maps in the future if the demand is high enough. MapStep is an open source jailbreak tweak and you can view the source code on Github at this link.

If you would like to give MapStep a try, it's available for free in Cydia's BigBoss repository. The tweak has no options to configure just install it and start using it.

I wonder if Apple will wait until iOS9 to steal this awesome idea, or if they'll put it in in one of iOS8's .1 updates?
