Default Apple Shows Off HealthKit at WWDC 2014

As expected, Apple used WWDC 2014 as a platform to showcase its growing interest in the health and wellness of its users.

Meet what Apple calls "HealthKit," which serves as a new app bundled with iOS 8 that's all about fitness and tracking apps and related mobile health solutions.

In short, this innovative platform provides an easily accessible hub that lets iPhone monitor any health metrics they deem important. Apple's SVP Craig Federighi explained that the core value of HealthKit is that it curtails the frustration and inefficiency of having to manually monitor and gather different chunks of health information from across various health applications.

To facilitate a centralized experience, HealthKit procures data from a wide assortment of third-party apps. Apple says Nike is already on board with many others in the wings and expected to follow in the coming months.

Today at WWDC 2014, Apple even confirmed that it will team up with the Mayo Clinic (and other leading health organizations) as a means to give healthcare providers access to patient information and facilitate secure and efficient communications with patients.

Although Apple said nothing of its rumored iWatch supposedly in the works, it's clear that HealthKit would be a phenomenal resource for users of such a smartwatch product.
