    Sorry bud,
I don't use the Portal feature. Instead, I'm subscribed to iPhone News and Mac/Apple News to get my updates. That way, I can reply to threads.

Funny thing is that I've never had the ads in the new MMI.app. I wonder if it's my hosts file that blocks them!

Here's a link to my file. Place it in /etc and rename the old one (just in case):

A host file is a list of IP and DNS addresses. It normally only contains a few. I'm not sure what its actual purpose is, but it can redirect ad hosting servers to the device's local IP so that they are never connected to.

Is the original Host file that gets placed in /etc the function of some tweak?

No. Host files exist on all modern operating systems. We should probably both do some further research about their intended purpose (unless Orby sees these posts). I'm also pretty sure that no tweaks modify the host file in any way, unless you see something unusual in your original file.

Then how was Thazsar's Host file able to get rid of MMi ads on the new app and mine did not - when we both purchased the ad removal in iO5, 6 and 7...? Something had to make HIS host file unique from mine. That's why I concluded a tweak.. Thanks, Zok!

Some people catalogue a list of ad hosting servers and distribute ad-blocking host files. It's been going on for a long time. Thazsar most likely got his from one of those distributors unless he is one himself. He has a package in his repo that installs this host file.
