Default 'Bio' Gives Your Non-Touch ID Device a Fingerprint Scanner Simulator On the Lock Screen

Not everyone has an iPhone 5s, but if you still want to fool your friends into thinking your device is capable of scanning your fingerprint to unlock the Lock Screen, then check out a new jailbreak tweak called Bio by iOS developer Javier Brito.

Bio basically gives you a fingerprint scanner simulator on the Lock Screen of your iOS 7 device. It doesn't actually scan your fingerprint, but it gives you all of the animations and user interface elements that you would expect. The tweak puts an icon on your Lock Screen, and when you put your finger on it, a red laser moves up and down and then your device will unlock, as shown above.

Bio works whether you have a passcode or not, and it completely bypasses the "Slide to Unlock" text. When you wake up your iOS device, the icon replaces the "Slide to Unlock" text, and after you've put your finger on the fake scanner and waited a couple of seconds, the device will unlock for you without the need to swipe.

If you're worried about security, Bio comes with the option of assigning "secret steps," which must be invoked before "scanning" your fingerprint in order to unlock the device. Since you're the only one that would know the secret step, some average Joe that picks up your phone and puts their finger on the icon won't be able to unlock your iOS device.

The tweak adds a preferences pane to the Settings application where you can configure a number of options:

Here, you can enable or disable the tweak on demand, choose to have your finger on the icon or anywhere on the Lock Screen to "scan" your finger, configure your secret steps that will be necessary to perform before the device will unlock, choose the shape of the scanner icon, configure the behavior of existing Lock screen elements, configure animation speed, scanner size, image scale, and scanner opacity, choose the color of the scanner line and text, and configure some other miscellaneous options as well.

In case you're interested about the secret steps you can use, you can pick from any of the following:

    • Flipping the volume switch
    • Control Center clock tap once
    • Control Center calculator tap once
    • Control Center camera tap once
    • Swipe once (pick a direction)
    • Swipe twice (pick a direction)
    • Swipe three times (pick a direction)

The scanner shape can also be configured to be either:

    • Rectangular with round corners
    • Circular
    • Triangular
    • Rectangular

You can configure the scanner image to be anything you want. You can pick any picture from your Photo Library, so if you're not satisfied with the default icon, you can find another interesting image on Google Images, or something else, and use it instead.

Since this is only a fingerprint scanner simulator, it's obviously not going to give your non-Touch ID device any kind of Touch ID functionality. That is a piece of hardware that is built into the iPhone 5s, so no piece of software is actually going to give your older iOS devices Touch ID functionality. But that doesn't stop us from faking it.

If you would like to give Bio a try, it's still a really cool way to fool your friends. It's available in Cydia's BigBoss repostiory for $1.99 and requires an iOS 7 device to be installed.

Is there anything different in this that makes it worth the extra $2 from just a free fingerprint scanner app in the App Store?

An app can't be open on your Lock Screen. Bio can at least unlock the Lock Screen, so it's much more convincing.

The biggest reason being app store apps cannot unlock your device (also with secret steps/custom passcode). There is a free version "bio lite" that only comes with an on/off switch.
