Default Experts Show Concern Over New CarPlay Technology

Apple recently announced its new CarPlay technology, which will make text messaging, hands-free calling and navigation while driving much easier to use. According to CNN Money, auto safety experts are concerned about CarPlay contributing to the distraction of driving, meanwhile consumers may be excited for this in-car technology. The following was mentioned regarding the matter:

The idea that people want to be on their phones, and therefore let's give them a way to do that -- that's not putting safety first, that's putting convenience and the desire to be in touch first," said Bruce Hamilton, manager of research and communications at the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.
Siri is known for its hands-free interactions with devices- however, experts argue that “cognition distraction” still plays a role during these interactions. They say that it moves a driver’s attention away from the road and onto their phones instead. Furthermore, recent studies have mentioned that voice-to-text features in device assistant software such as Siri can potentially double driver reaction times and carry extensive risk during driving.

CarPlay has been designed from the ground up to provide drivers with an incredible experience using their iPhone in the car,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPhone and iOS Product Marketing. “iPhone users always want their content at their fingertips and CarPlay lets drivers use their iPhone in the car with minimized distraction.
CarPlay will be available on Apple’s iOS 7 update for iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, and iPhone 5s owners. Models from major automobile companies such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Ferrari, Honda, Hyundai, and others will debut CarPlay in 2014.

If your a real driver your not going to be messing around with anything. Real drivers are focused on the road and their aware of their surrounding at all times. Real drivers enjoy every millisecond of being on the road or track. Silly things like apps or phones are not a distraction because driving is the main focus, of a real driver.

If you are a real driver you'd have noticed by now that the other 98% of the drivers are the ones who ARE going to use all this integration and ****. Lets just hope driving becomes safer once this integration happens. Currently 1 out of 4 drivers are on the phone while driving.

More accidents coming. People drive and text/call. Now add this into the mix.

Look, the distraction cat is out of the bag, and there's no way to put it back in. People are going to do what they want to do. This was true even before smartphones with eating, reading, talking old flip phones and tons of other distractions.

Now the game is all about trying to make it incrementally safer. And that's what this attempts to do. They just need to improve voice commands and/or have a better physical eyes-free interface.

If you don't like voice commands, I think I've seen some cars with a scroll wheel that can make selections on the screen. So, you can have a touch screen interface, but when in motion you can use the scroll wheel to scroll through icons and get a audio feedback like "music"" or "maps" and then push down on the wheel to select.

Bottom line is, people are going to continue to do these distracting things. Best way to avoid more accents is to make them incrementally safer.

Very true fleurya. They don't like us wearing any kind of head phones when we drive, yet i can blast my radio to the point of not hearing anything external anyway. Where there is a problem there is an answer and where there is an answer there is a problem.

Personally, i don't need Siri/car play on my dashboard. Would it make it easier to say what station i want, instead of taking my eyes off the road..umm yes it would. I feel like it is progress..incremental as it is.

These studies are all baseless. Unless your car only has 1 seat, you are going to be distracted by having a passenger in your car. I would like to find one person who has never had a conversation with their passenger. Then there is the whole aspect of driving your children in your car. I would like Mr Hamilton to comment on the distracting nature of children in a vehicle.

This whole distracted smartphone business is just a ploy to issue traffic violations. Drivers are going to be distracted by their passengers and that is it. Cars also have radios and mirrors which have a tendency to distract drivers. Sure smartphones might be a new addition to the list of distractions but I'm sure there were plenty of distracted driving related accidents before the smartphone came out!

It's going to suck for two reasons. 1: Apple maps is still horribly outdated. There's a restaurant that's been built for 2 years up the street from me and it is still not listed on apple maps. I even put a request in. 2: The touch screen responsiveness is laggy, not like an iPhone or iPad screen. Apple didn't put the modules together and that sucks.

When AM radios and CBs came out years ago it was supposed to make driving unsafe. Doesn't seem that bad.

First it was using a phone handset in the car, them SMS'ing. Now the safety nanny do-gooders reckon we are all so easily distracted that we can't even interact with our car dashboards. The majority of in car multimedia and info systems can be considered no less distracting. Might as well ban phone calls in cars all together since they are just as mentally distracting.. How many people out there regardless of how good a driver they are, find themselves deep into conversation to the point the process of driving feels secondary? It's an odd feeling at times when you realise you are doing, but I certainly haven't had any issues since the days of analogue mobile phones because of it.
