Default NPD: Apple Widens Lead Over Samsung in US Smartphone Market Share in 2013

The launch of Apple’s iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C helped the Cupertino California company widen the lead over Samsung with 42% of smartphones owned in the US by the fourth quarter of 2013 being iPhones. Samsung dropped and was left with 26% share according to the latest data from the NPD Group.

Apple’s share of the US market was up from 35% in the fourth quarter of 2012 based on the data. Samsung went up as well but not by as much, increasing from 22% of US smartphones from a year prior to the 26% found in the 2013 data.

The figures show that Apple’s lead in the home market continues to widen and that Samsung is taking an increasingly larger share of the US market as rivals slip. Together both Apple and Samsung command 68% of smartphones owned in the US. As both tech giants grew, competing smartphone makers such as Motorola, HTC and BlackBerry saw significant losses. The only other company among the top six to see any share gains was LG, which grew slightly but still only controls less than 10% of the market.

NPD also found that smartphone penetration continues to grow in America, reaching six in ten cell phone users in the fourth quarter of 2013. This was up from 52% of the mobile market in the fourth quarter of 2012. As a result of the increase in smartphones, it isn’t a surprise to see mobile data also on the rise; with smartphone owners polled using an average of 6.6 gigabytes per month as of the end of 2013, up from 5.5 gigabytes a year prior. Streaming music services were seen as the “key driver” in data user with Pandora, iHeart Radio and Spotify taking the top three spots.
