Default Apple Rumored to Relaunch the iPhone 4 in India to Boost Sales

With the smartphone race continuing to heat up in emerging markets keen on low-priced handsets, Apple is supposedly set to resurrect the 8 GB iPhone 4 exclusively for buyers in India. Citing unnamed sources at four of Apple’s to trade partners in the region, a report from The Economic Times states that the company will begin sales of the 8 GB iPhone 4 in a push for market share in the region.

The publication continues by claiming the India-only iPhone 4 will be priced at roughly 15,000 rupees or $243 USD, after factoring in buybacks and equated monthly installment (EMI) plans. This would represent a savings of 11,500 rupees, or $187 USD, compared to the unit’s original retail price from three years ago.

One of the issues regarding the move is iPhone 4 supply. With the introduction of the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C in September, Apple stopped iPhone 4 production and moved the 4S into the legacy handset’s entry-level sales slot. According to sources, the company may seek iPhone 4 handsets from unsold inventory around the world, though such a move would be a huge logistical undertaking.

The concept of offering low-cost solutions to get iPhones into the hands of customers isn’t new however. Apple and rival smartphone manufacturer Samsung locked horns in a price war last year that ended up seeing both companies hand out deep discounts to woo potential buyers. A key Apple strategy has been EMI schemes that help spread the cost of the handset by spreading payments out over multiple months. In early 2013, market research firm IDC found iPhone sales rose 400% over a three-month period following the institution of such plans.

As of right now, no official word has been given on the rumored reintroduction of the iPhone 4 but one source claims Apple’s main Indian distributors, Redington and Ingram Micro, could start sales as early as next week. We’ll just have to wait and see.

So this is now more important than fragmentation?

The 4 scrapes by in terms of iOS7, it'll be unable to run iOS8. They'll be buying an obsolete phone.

Updates in most cases are NOT needed. Im still running iOS 5 on my iPad 2. Fully Jailbroken and everything runs great..everything. More than I can say for the current JB. While being on the latest and greatest is nice, once again its not needed. Im sure people in India will do just fine with the iPhone 4.

Here's how you have to look at it from apples perspective. India (on average) makes FAR less than the rest of the advanced, or advancing markets. If it's between selling an outdated phone to someone who will appreciate it, and would otherwise would take there business elsewhere (cheap android) it makes perfect sense to do this. Not only do they take care of the problem for lost revenue on unsold devices, they now just made a sale to someone who will appreciate the phone whether it's old or not.

But now here is the question- when Apple starts shipping the iPhone 4's, will they come with iOS 7 already installed, or will India be lucky enough to get some iteration of iOS 6?
