The main threat to the jailbreak community is making users decide between the advanced syncing features of iCloud, or the sometimes rickety, amateur versions from the Cydia store. Yes, there will always be exceptions because the overall motivation of jailbreak devs is to add content that is not there, so in their nature they exist between the cracks, and always will.

However, iCloud is different. iCloud is based on a multi-billion-dollar farm of computers/ infrastructure. That is something that no jailbreak, 3rd party dev can compete with. It's exactly the direction Apple should be moving, and it was very smart of them to go that route.

Yes, this feature will undoubtedly be disabled, but turning off the feature is the main threat to jailbreakers. Who's going to want to jailbreak and lose all their syncing features? Apple is essentially offering its users a crossroads option; come with us and enjoy these features, or go with jailbreaking and lose them.

If you're not worried about this, you should be! The threat is greater than ever. Especially if you like themes.

Themes/ mods are made by regular people, and if those regular people can't afford two devices - one jailbroken, one vanilla - you'll lose that dev and their unique artistic visions.

My dream is for Apple to offer a theme store. Most of the 200,000,000 or so iDevice owners in the world don't pirate their programs - but I'd bet a huge majority of jailbreakers do so simply to get free stuff. My own theme has maybe a 100:1, pirate:buyer ratio. Maybe higher.

Even with iCloud, it may not be enough to entice me away from jailbreaking, but I'm one of the relative few that can actually make money with a jailbroken device, but most people don't have that kind of incentive. If all the rats leave the sinking ship, so to speak, it will leave us less incentive to keep doing what we do.

This is nothing new. We've known from the beginning that the relative success of the jailbreak scene depends completely on our ability to offer what Apple can't/ won't. It's always been a threat, and even if Apple doesn't seal the deal with iCloud, if you're smart you'll understand the added pressure this places on us.

Why are you stereotyping jailbreakers as pirates/thieves? I don't really appreciate that. I JB'd my phone to get some cool, useful features from Cydia that Apple doesn't currently offer. But I never, I repeat NEVER, EVER pirate or steal otherwise paid apps and rob developers of proceeds they should rightfully be receiving.

Definitely the best IOS apple has ever released.

I don't post alot, but i do read this site on a fairly regular basis.
That being said, i would dread giving up my biteSMS! Some features look interesting, some are "meh".

Wondering, since iBooks, works the best imo, are we gonna get
dark/night reading feature yet? I was using Stanza till it got glitchy, now I'm using Kobo. Would rather use iBooks.
    Anyone know?
    Peace,
    Texascop

It's not a stereotype when the majority of people jailbreak to pirate. WE (legit jailbreakers) are the minority in an already small minority (people who jailbreak at all)

I'm a helpful jerk, fear me.

anyone just notice modmyi posted an article on "how ios 5 is available to the public without a developer account NOW" AND THEN TOOK IT DOWN?!?!?

How to Upgrade to iOS 5 Today, Without Any Developer Account

What led you to believe that the majority of JB'ers do it to pirate apps? Is there some statistical data to confirm that? If so then I will consider myself a "legit" jailbreakers if there is such a thing lol

What's the big deal? I sure wouldn't want to do that and then have my phone essentially turned into an iPod Touch. Also, what do you think installing iOS5 beta would do for basebands???

I also agree. The new features are cutting edge for apple products unless you have a jailbroken device. All apple does now is just take ideas from Cydia developers which I'm not saying it's a bad thing. It's good to add in features that people want but the new features really isn't that new and cool if it's already been released a long time ago.

Anyone know where a person can find a list of the 200+ new features to IOS 5? I would really like to see them incorporate something really simple, like being able to customize the icons. The really only thing I miss about not being able to JB the Ipad 2(and SBSettings, lol).

    Arrow iOS5 beta
the first iOS5 beta seems great so far - haven't noticed any major bugs/issues, and the only major feature missing is WiFi sync. pretty hyped about that though.

Couple things I've noticed playing around with iOS5 on the iPhone 4.

    1) There are no system wallpapers under settings. Its empty when you click on it.
    2) Whenever the popup window comes up telling you there is a wifi signal in range, the window is empty.

I hope they add the weather widget to the lock screen and not just the notification center.

Really diggin the lock screen camera access. Makes catching that picture of a UFO or bigfoot really fast and easy!

I have a dev acct....that's all im gonna say about that

    now then,

@Poseidon, in reference to what you said at the bottom of page 3:

Personally I don't see what the big deal is with everyone crying about updates. I think at the end of the day people for get this thing is just a PHONE, I don't need loads and loads of features. I need apps to help make certain things easier, which I have. I need a decent browser for occasional searches....and that in tandem with the Google and AroundMe apps is perfect, b/c at the end of the day i really look to my phone when i'm searching for a place...an address, a number, etc. I have factory navigation (Avalanche LTZ) but the Navigon by FAR outdoes that! Better, more colorful and informative interface (even vocal warnings for going over posted speed limits) and the best part, spoken street names! i think a customizable widget screen (a la OS X Lion) would be nice....i hate having to start up the ESPN app everytime i want to get to the latest scores, for example. Being able to check my bank balances, pay bills like my car insurance, AT&T, etc...i'm good with that already. the notifications are cool, the iMessage is cool (thought I could've stood to have more of an iChat Mobile kinda deal), and im great with email and what not...the only thing I have yet to see is attaching things while already IN the mail app. Personally without unlimited tethering I'll always want to jailbreak (thank you PDAnet). Again, it's a PHONE to me so it' more of a PDA which is what it needs to be. I dont need a 30MP camera and all this other crap people cry about. I'd like to have my videos emailed/MMS'd with the same quality they are recorded with, and perhaps some alternative security options for unlocking...even a tap to unlock option is ok with me, sliding gets annoying after a while. The new twitter integration is cool, but something in the realm of qTweeter would've also been nice. hmm..what else....hackless themes. that alone would bring a whole new dimension to the app store.

simple things, like being able to change your homescreen app names without the hack. too many things to name but trust me they're all little things. Once again, i think people forget it's just a phone at least, and a PDA at best. I've only installed iOS5 on my iPad 2. the iPhone 4 is still 4.2.1, JB'd to the fullest.

Truth is that most of these features were developed over the last few years by JailBreaking developers. I agree that the other OS's have similar features but the truth is that Apple Perfects them, and their UI is untouchable by all others.

At the end of the day its just a phone and you don't have to buy them.

I have had jailbroken iPhones for the last couple of years as I have always felt the desire to have many of the features Apple refused to provide in their iOS. When the iOS5 update comes, I don't think I will be jailbreaking my iPhone. I am getting tired of the reloading/rebooting/freezing but was always willing to put up with it because of the advanced features. One of the features I would miss with jailbreaking is the themes. However, since the cat & mouse game with a flurry of recent updates by Apple (admittedly minor that I didn't need to update) most of my themes are not compatible because the themers don't desire to or can't keep up.

I have had an iPad 2 for two months with absolutely no desire to jailbreak. While the native iPad may not give me the flexibility to use it to its capabilities, I love being able to use it without freezing or having to reboot.

I don't have any issues with Apple. They may take their time in updating the OS and/or devices behind other makers, but when they do things, they do it right.

What's with this mystical (mythical?) reloading/rebooting/freezing some people talk about? Are they just not doing it right? I've never had my device reload or reboot or freeze. No, I'm sorry, once (ONCE) it crashed to safe mode - but I knew why and I fixed it in about 20 seconds (it was caused by an error in a Cydia program).

So, I kind of agree with you - jailbreaking isn't for everyone: If you don't know what you're doing, DON'T Jailbreak! Jailbreaking is only for people that want to have a personal, unique computer in their pocket. If your desire is to be one of the sheep; to be the good little consumer that Apple wants you to be (kittens*, gumdrops*, smiles*), then by all means DO NOT Jailbreak.

I know, that's pretty darn sarcastic of me to say, and I hope you really don't take offense - it's just that, well... some people just shouldn't jailbreak. Really. People ask me about jailbreaking all the time, and the first thing I ask them is, "Are you computer-savvy?," and if they say no then I tell them not to do it ("Your phone will explode, don't do it!" - then they never ask me about it again). Learning about the ins and outs of computers, even mobile computers, is a time-consuming process. It's taken me years to learn what I have, and I still haven't even scratched the surface of some of the things I could do to further personalize my device. There's just so much to learn, if you're not focused and dedicated then jailbreaking is NOT for you - you're just not the kind of person that should do it. You've got to really want it. You've got to be a "break barriers" type of person - an aggressive individualist of sorts.

Jailbreaking is a choice that you have to make for the right reasons. If it's annoying, or if you can't/ won't search for answers (every answer I've ever had about jailbreaking/ themes/ theming is out there, trust me) - then you should maybe take a break from it and come back at another time when you've gathered the patience.

Actually, with iOS 5 coming out, this is the one time I can say "I don't blame you" if you decide not to jailbreak. It will be a blow to the jailbreak community I'm sure, but one way or another, those that want it enough will find a way. I'm just really interested to see who will stay and who will go. I'll be jailbreaking for the rest of my life - I'm sure of it. Making themes for the iPhone has turned this small computer into a modern work of art. Truly. I often can't believe how amazing a creation Apple has given us. I'm excited to see what they'll come up with five, ten, or twenty years from now! But that's for another post!
