Jobs mentioned that they "are tracking problems with the proximity sensor" and that it will be addressed in the next update.

Was that a quote from Comex or the Dev Team? Now you're confusing me...
Just zip it YOU do not know what you are talking about and this leads to RUMORS, leave release dates or anything of that matter to the Dev's actually releasing the tool.

If I believe something is going to happen based upon what I've read, I am going to say it. And say it as many times as I choose. If you don't like that, you can go play wii bowling instead of reading my posts.

The iphone 3G is the new 2G. I am sure with the faster processors and double the ram that the iphone 3G is destined to be not-supported. The Pro-Will always be unlocked Cons-limited app compatibility. 4.0 on the 3G and Cydia are not working well. Hopefully 4.1 will bring homescreen to the 3G.

Yes, enough of the jailbreak. This is about iOS 4.1. I mean, I can use my deductive skills and predict a public release date for iOS 4.1 by using past iOS release dates!

iOS x.1 releases the past few years...
    September 12, 2008 iOS 2.1
    September 9, 2009 iOS 3.1

So I will assume iOS 4.1 will be released during the Apple music event this September. Looking forward to the proximity sensor fix and interested to see how Game Center has been redesigned.

For 3.1 the first beta was released June 30, 2009. Not sure about 2.1.

EDIT: 2.1 beta one went out to devs July 24, 2008.

Ok the 4.1 beta 2 is pretty much the same as the 1st beta with the exception of some minor fixes for devs. The proximity sensor is addressed though I believe it was already fixed in the 1st beta. The baseband is 7.1 so unless ATT let's you unlock do not update to 4.1 if you need an unlock when it comes out prob around sept beginning oct.

2.1 was released July 24th, 2008. 3.1 was released July 14th, 2009. So he's probably 99% correct about the official 4.1 coming out in early September.

Yea I remember the 3.1 beta came out around the beginning of last summer. Wasnt that the OS beta that finally introduced copy/paste and MMS? Also, from the dates you noted earlier makes sense for an estimate for an actual OS update.

What exactly does this GameCenter do? I've seen screenshots with the GameCenter icon before and remember hearing steve jobs say something about it in a presentation but I never really understood what it was for other than it has to do with Social Gaming.

    As stated on macrumors:
Apple has released the second beta for iPhone OS 4.1 to developers. The first beta was released two weeks ago and introduced some minor new features. Today's beta seems to only add minor bug fixes into the mix without any notable other features.

The iPhone 4 proximity sensor issue does not appear to be fixed in this latest beta. Apple has said the proximity sensor will be addressed in a future software update.
So don't get your hopes up
