I don't think this will ever catch on as a standard unless it can be used over 3G!

Yea but who really wants to use video calling as a standard way to make calls. Even the land line video calls didn't make it; I can see it far less useful on the mobile as a standard. Now for certain cases I can see how it would be very useful but I wouldn't do this walking down the street or things of that nature.

You have a really good point there pinche cerote, you are smart, why bother with all this conversation, if we needed video calling we would buy another phone a long time ago, if it have it ok cool, lets wait first to come out, test the thing and then theres gona be a discussion forum with stupid question like. "they can see me but can see them" or "doesnt start please help" or my personal favorite "need help please" with what stupid?
Till then lets just relax and wait till june 25 or ask gizmodo to borrow the phone for a while.

First, why make video land line if you can use skype at home much cheaper?!
Second, mobile video calls are much more practical, as you can share views and emotions at the moment- LIVE. I've seen myself in Japan (where all this talks would seem ancient scripts), how a guy in the supermarket walks through the shelves showing to his wife with his phone whats on them and she would tell him what to take!
Third, the problem with skype on mobiles is that it makes usual calls too cheap, so what cell companies do in some countries (no idea how) they block the calling function on your device, so you use skype as a mobile chat only.
The issue emerged due to purely economic factors. If it would "democratic technology to everyone" we would've lived in Azimov's world by now.

I would have been happy with skype over WiFi. Honestly, that would have been a large selling point of the phone for me. I skype so frequently it would be nice not to have to sit behind the computer to do it.

So are we limited to video chatting back and forth only with other iphone 4 users?

I think it depends on what is considered standard. If standard means "all the time" or "nothing but" then I think you are right. As it stands it seems it will not even be an option though. The problem with land lines is that they are simply inconvenient. They have to be set up where one can comfortably sit in a presentable position for generally an extended period of time. Frankly I think they are inconvenient. On a phone like this I can see myself doing a video conference before bed, on the train, etc. The possibilities are endless.

Off topic a bit, but I think a better comparison is a standard swimming pool to an olympic sized swimming pool. One can't swim AT ALL in a bath tub. One can still do everything they want on an ipod versus an ipad, some things are just more comfortable/practical on the ipad.

Why is everyone saying there bill will be crazy.....This is not the iPad Data Plan... with the Cap!

ATT users should have unlimited data plan on their cell phone plan..right!

I think some people are getting confused if im not mistaken...

You should be able to use 3g Unrestrictor with no problem

Very true. The reason I said land line was in the mid- late 90s there was the video phones. Several family members of ours had it including us.

There are many people that would use the hell out of video chat. But I just think at the moment that movement is sort of small. Testing it out and see how many use it on wifi may give apple a chance to gauge it's use to cell companies on how much bandwidth to be looking for to use for it if they decide to use it beyond wifi.

personally I won't bother using video calls just so we can see eachother. However, I can see me using it when I'm at gigs, or simply want to say to my mates "check this out" when I'm flying RC helis etc.

I was in Paris three years ago working with some guys from the Czech Republic. We were at the Eiffel Tower one afternoon. I shot a picture on my phone and sent it to my wife then I called her and we talked. They used their phones (Nokia?) to call their spouses and then switched to a video call in the middle of the conversation. I couldn't even send a picture without it interrupting my call.

Three years later and we 'might' get video calling? W00t! We are sooo advanced.
