Default Was Your AT&T Upgrade Eligibility Moved Up?

I had been planning on waiting for my AT&T upgrade credit, due in August, before getting a next-generation iPhone (iPhone HD? iPhone 4G? iPhone 2010? iPhone IV: Afterlife?), even though I knew I'd want one at approximately 2pm Eastern Daylight Time on June 7, 2010. I'm getting a 64GB, and without credit those are going to be pricey. Plus there's the looming Early Termination Fee, which should be low based on the twenty-two months I've had my beat-up 3G, but who wants to spend more then they have to?

So I called AT&T on Saturday asking for the exact day my credit kicks in, so I can budget. They painfully-nice lady at Customer Service nicely informed me that I have upgrade credit now, today: two months earlier than anticipated. Sure enough, when I go to "myWireless" it tells me that "As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee." And the nice AT&T lady said they'd waive the upgrade fee... which is also what shows up when I call *639# from my phone. Sweet!

I chalked it up to the standard AT&T screw-up, just in my favor for once. However, according to posts at MacRumors and AppleInsider this morning, many customers are reporting the same thing. It's not clear yet whether it's a major screw-up, or a great deal AT&T is giving its customers but declining to publicize for some reason.

Perhaps we'll hear an announcement paired with the iPhone A4 unveiling later today. But if you're an AT&T customer, dial *639# and see what your upgrade eligibility is.

I though there was already an article on mmi about att allowing early upgrade because of the new iphone launch?

I have a 3gs that I got in late july of last year and according to att I can upgrade (with $18 fee) today.

I've had my 3G since mid July after it came out. I can upgrade without the $18 fee.

my main line says im due for upgrade lol , who woulda thought. I bought the 3gs in sept 09.

my wifes still says 5/4/11 however when i log into att and go to her phone upgrades it lists all the full discount upgrade prices as well.

    Anyone else notice same thing?

This is a smart move on at&t's part. Locking people in for another two years early around all the hype of the new iPhone. Smart move at&t. I just checked and also got the same upgrade message.

I dialed the number and got the same text MSG. I got my 3g in oct 08, was eligable to upgrade and got my 3gs in oct 09; does this mean I can upgrade now and don't have to wait til oct to get the discount pricing???

Meh. I'm not eligible until 3/01/2011 and has been that way in the last 3 months since I started checking. I got my 3GS in June 2009.

Nope they did not move mine up and I am not to happy about it! lol

I was told to walk into a AT&T store and sweet talk those guys in there into moving it up so I am going to. After not being able to use my phone for seven months while in Florida because of their crappy towers you would think they would have moved me up to be nice.

I called AT&T about moving me up and that is how I found out about going into one of the stores.

Are we sure they are referring to an iphone upgrade or the standard upgrade for any other phone? Aren't there two different upgrade options?

I like how they give me an $18 fee, when I have waited 2 years with my trusty 3G and my commitment finished in March. Why is my fee not waived? 03473
