Just to show everyone the prices that I got when I went on the Apple website and went to the pre-order link. This is what I found. At the bottom of the page there in the smaller print, it says something about "qualified customers only" with an asterisk beside it. Not really sure what that means. Anyone else have any feedback on the "qualified customers"? or have see these prices as well?

I reserved mine for 499 last night and I have a 3G already. How's that possible?

OK - without reading through the whole thread - which post says no video camera?

As for the upgrade price it looks like different people are being told different things - see TF's post #336 above,

I think they're talking about no video for the 3G.

I'm a helpful jerk, fear me.

so i'm not quite sure what's going on for people who want to upgrade.... if i'm passed due for an ugrade and want to get the 3gs, i have to pay $599 for the 16gb? What if i took my name off the family plan i'm under and then re-added it? Wouldn't that consider me a new person?

Ok guys, so I talked to a friend of mine that works at one of the "main" stores (not the little offshoot stores that don't sell Iphones) and he told me that if you have an upgrade, then you can get the Iphone 3GS for: 16g-$199, 32g-$299 and the regular Iphone 3g in 8g for $99. BUT if you aren't eligible for an upgrade, then he said you add an extra $200 on top of the prices I just gave. (except on the regular 3g phones I'm not sure if you add the extra $200 because I was specifically asking about the 3GS versions)and he also told me they are trying to get rid of all the regular 3G phone too. Can anyone confirm this from another source?

I got the 3G on release day last year. Walked into ATT today to get the lowdown on the transition for next Friday. My boss was with me and got his on day one last year too. We were thrilled to find out that we could pre-order instead of having to camp out like last year.

He was told he had to wait until 7/12 to get the subsidized price of $299. Lucky for him he had another number on his plan that was eligible for upgrade enabling him to pre-order and get his phone on release date next Friday.

When I inquired about my number, I was told I was not eligible until 12/12/09. I asked how my boss was eligible next week, yet I was not for another 6 months. They told me, that because the amount of business he conducted on his plan was greater he had special privileges. So basically I got an FU. I was furious and about ready to walk out of the store when the manager told me all I had to do was add an additional line. Transfer the numbers and cancel the new line with-in 30 days and I wouldn't have to pay an early termination fee and

I could get the $299/price. I whipped out the CC paid the man and before I got home had received confirmation that my iphone would be delivered on the 19th. I don't think they are supposed to tell you that, I don't know if he was hookin' me up. I have been going there for 8 years but It seemed easy enough for me. I'll sell my 3G and come out about even.

Every upgrade phone or new contract has 30 days to decide whether or not you want to keep it without paying an early term fee. If you decide no, (aka cancel your new line) you HAVE to send back the phone or you will be charged on your next bill the FULL price for the phone. It sounds to me like he told you what you wanted to hear without disclosing all the info to you. Call AT&T and ask them if you cancel within your 30 day window what you have to do with the phone. You will get a completely different answer I assure you.

EDIT: On second thought. The Key could be in transferring the numbers. If you transfer your old number to the new line you added, you would essentially be canceling your old line which now has the new number you could care less about. This does make sense, because you would be using the new phone on the new line. This is very interesting indeed, I wonder though if they will not allow you to switch numbers right off the bat.

Actually the key would have to be in transferring devices not lines. You need to keep your number on your existing line or else when you cancel line 2, you lose your number if its your number you transfer.

This is correct, here is a breakdown of how the prices work, I will refer to the 32 gig:
eligible for upgrade, no matter what phone you have= 299
have an iphone on your account now but not elig for upgrade= 499
have any other phone, not elig for upgrade= 699

basically discounts are given to new customers and customers who are eligible for an upgrade and a smaller discount to iphone carriers who are not out of contract

As for the first part of this and your replies.... I am going to go back over to macrumors and pm the guy that posted this to get more input..... and will add what I find out.... all I know is it worked for him you read what he said....

And get this! I just got off the phone with AT&T and yes I can upgrade right now for the $499.00 but if I wait until 7/23/09 I may be elegiable and can get it (32GB) for the $299.00 he said...

I asked him why the prices were not like last year.... he stated that they are offering it cheaper to get more newbies to go with AT&T. I then told him well I think your doing it all wrong because more than half of the world has iPhones and what you should have did was what you did with pricing last year.....

I then told him that Apple is probably going to ditch them anyway as soon as they can..... I told them with the prices they are quoting people that would love to upgrade for the fun of it all shows that AT&T is nothing but greedy........ he began to try to explain the marketing crap and business part of it and I told him we have a business and I know all about it and that I still felt AT&T should have did what they did last year as far as upgrading and their prices... and also reminded him that the world is still in hard times as nothing changed since last year.... and how could they think that people would pay that much for a phone right now that wanted to upgrade....

I also told him that they would have probably made more money by letting people upgrade at the $299.00 compared to the people that will join them....

I also told him many people like this phone and won't ever use another one but there are many that will never use this phone no matter what....

My bad, I skipped over where you said you read this from somewhere else. My friend works for AT&T customer support (the actual people you speak to when you 611) and I am going to call him on his break in 15 minutes to get the scoop.

I am not suprised at the prices you got, it seems to me that everyones standard upgrade is earlier than the 2 year mark. Mine said Jan. 2011 or something and I just upgraded May 3rd. I could not agree with you more as to how assinine their pricing is. The only thing I can think of is maybe they are trying to jack up their number of users, knowing that people like us will look for loop holes which either involves adding a new line or making a whole new account altogether.

When I spoke with a woman last night she did say that there might be better offers once the phone was released.

I still having a feeling things are not going to go as smooth for the guy who posted that. So far there is nothing solid. I can add a line right now and get the phone for 299, that doesnt mean much...the test is going to be whether or not he loses his number and/or has to give the 3gs back. I'm in no hurry to blindly jump into situations like that to POSSIBLY get it for 299. I'll hang out on my phone now until someone has successfully done it and canceled the line and kept their number and the new phone.

And I agree that they would have gotten more people to purchase phones, had the priced it like last year. I guess their rational was that they would make an additional 200 off all of us. Not realizing that the new phone isnt worth THAT much more to us 3g owners. Soooo realistically instead of making an extra 200 of us, they will lose 300 to each customer who refuses to pay 499 for a 32 gig. Its such simple mathematics to me. Do you lose 200 per person or 300?

and i was sad because i did not have enought money to bought the new iphone
but noway i will bought this is the same thing i can just update on 3.0 and i am fine

  11. #351
AT&T make their money from contracts, not the price of the phone. This upgrade is aimed at people who have come to the end of their 2 year contract on 2G phones - why would they give you full discount when you already have 1 year of your contract to go, extending two years from now only gives them 1 year of extra revenue, hence the lower discount.

    Hey,
I was going to try the same thing cause your idea sounded pretty good about adding a line then canceling it before 30 days. Well I have a friend that works for AT&T and they WILL charge you for the phone if you dont return it after canceling it. But he said what you can do is add a line and do absolutely nothing with it and only get charged $10 bucks a month for just the line and then just use your new iphone with your current simcard... Thats just if you dont mind the extra $10 a month. Im going to do it, because my current iphone contract doesnt end until october. That way if there is a newer iphone or anything like that next year I can just upgrade that line... pfft extra $10 dont bother me! $299 32GB 3GS here I come!

The only problem I see with that is that when I spoke with a rep she said every iphone on a family plan or line HAS to have the 30 data plan. I have not attempted to add another line online but I know when you upgrade it will not allow you to checkout without having the data plan on the phone. Verify this before you commit to something that is really going to 40 dollars a month.

Very good point! Im just saying what my friend would do. It seemed like hes done it before, so im going to do it and let you know how it goes, but ill def will make sure im not getting charged $40 a month before doing it...

  16. #355
Yeah, its possible he did it on another phone? I think both Apple and AT&T are pretty good at making sure they do not lose money. I just tried to add a line on the Apple site under the "existing customers" and it said that adding another line must be done at an Apple retail store. There are some faqs at wireless.att.com that answered questions in regards to adding another line. I am work, so I cannot view a lot of websites to check that out for you now.

  17. #356
Was going through the same motions as all of you.

I have had nothing but problems with reception. Called today and found apple instead of usual att rep.

Long story short, Att kept making excuses and comping 4 months of service. Today, apple rep just said we will send a new 16 gb and return old phone within 10 days and it will be no charge.

So I started thinking..........put my new sealed 16gb on ebay and sell on ebay for 500? and then buy new 3gs 32gb for 499. Have it delivered on 19th,

Not such a bad deal eh?

I have a feeling the lower priced 8gb is going to cockblock you making 500even off a sealed one. The 16gb are what, 149 now? Add the early term fee and a month of service (we'll say 100) and anyone can get a sealed iphone 3g 16gb for 424?

Good point but thats a subsidized price with a 2 year contract extension with att right? assuming your eligible?

They can buy this and run with any network right? 16gb seems to be more of a sweet spot in terms of memory.

I thought early term was 175?

    Well heres what im saying:

you get the 16gb 3G for 149 with two year contract
pay one month of service so when you cancel you do not have to send it back
    pay early term fee

    149 (price with new contract)
    100 (one month of service)
175 (early term fee because you arent doing the 2 years)

    424

I'm in the same boat as you. I was watching our phones sell for 500-600 all day on ebay but that was because at that time our were still going for 299 with new service.

    We all got f-ed lol

  21. #360
How can you get a 16Gb for $149? I thought they had discontinued the 16Gb 3G?
