Thread: iPhone 3G is OFFICIAL and $199 - flush headphones, black, metal buttons, same screen

I don't want some link to a website for mms. I want to get them directly on my phone like normal people

The carrier company I use in my country doesn't have 3g yet, they will have it probably until later this year, so I will stay with my 2G iPhone for at least the end of the year.

  3. #103
So without a contract the iphones will be at regular price? I guess I have no reason to buy one then. Im with tmobile and they dont even offer 3g yet. Anybody know when tmobile will offer 3g?

T-Mobile (US) is in the process of rolling out 3G (not sure what markets are available yet): however T-Mobile (US) is using a different frequency for their 3G in the US, so the iPhone 3G, will not support 3G on T-Mobile (US); It will continue to work for voice and GPRS (Edge)

Well I think it will benefit 1ST GEN iPhone owners. We can now buy replacements dirt cheap, especially if we just need parts. This also translates into more iPhones in the home since my lady still has a sprint phone and it costs us both out the azz to talk because she didn't wanna slap down $400 for an iPhone. This will also benefit us since we can pick one up for $150 or less. Can you imagine what the 1st gen is going to go for now?

A Brand new 8g is $199, so a used 2nd gen 8g iphone will go for around $150. So what do you think a used 1st gen 8g is going to go for? These things are barely worth $100-125 now. That's going to make it simple to replace or buy more for family members. This is a plus for me especially since the lady is gonna have one now.

Apple has made a lot of cost cutting changes and I think once people look inside they are going to realize how cheap the 2nd gen phone is and stick with the higher quality 1st gen, but the price is not going to go up for them..... the new thing is here. The 1st gen are worthless, but probably still much better inside.

Once we get a new one and crack it open, we'll see who between the 2nd gen owners and the 1st gen owners has the last laugh. It might just be one of those things where the 1st gen command insane prices for the parts inside.

You have it backwards. If anything, this is going to skyrocket the price of used 1st-gen since they'll be the only iPhone you can buy without a contract. Also, you won't be seeing many used 2nd gen because every 2nd gen will have a 2-year contract attached to it. So unless the person goes "hmmm, I want to sell my iPhone on ebay even though I'll still have to pay for this contract for over a year or pay $175 to cancel it" you won't see many 2nd gen on ebay. Hell, the only way you'll see a 2nd gen on ebay it will be for 199+175+profit from people getting rid of them.

That's only for new 2nd gen phones. They had refurbs out on the 1st gen phones in less than 2 months and will be the same story for the 2nd gen.

Oooooh, reburb phones. I hadn't thought of those. I'm genuinely curious what are they going to do with them since simply selling them would go against what they have. Maybe even cheaper (free?) with a contract?

I'm thrilled about the price. I called a local AT&T store today to find out if I'd be able to just tack 2 more years onto my contract in order to get that price (199-299) or if there would be a "full retail" price I'd have to pay, and they didn't have an answer, so I just have my fingers crossed for now. I'd rather "everyone and their grandmother" have one than the "exclusivity." The more iPhones on the market, the more attractive it is to software developers and accessory makers.

Unfortunately, everything else is a huge dissapointment. It's hard for me to get excited about 3G when just about every other decent AT&T phone has had it for quite a while. Congratulations to Apple for catching up.

Edit: On a side note, I can't say I'm thrilled that I'll be paying an extra $10/month per iPhone due to the increased data package rate.

I'm going to pass for now. Not really interested in only being able to get it through AT&T. I can live with the slower internet, been using it for this long so a few extra seconds per page load isn't going to kill me. I'm really quite happy with my iPhone and I don't see enough new stuff to jump, even with the subsidized price.
    Apples taste good.

*Based on 3G and EDGE testing. Actual speeds vary by site conditions. Based on iPhone 3G (8GB) and first-generation iPhone (8GB) purchases. Requires new 2-year AT&T rate plan, sold separately.

Prices are for AT&T 2 yr contracts the new phone requires in store activation, so i'll hold off of the selling of my current.

    It does say "sold separately"

I don't see why they wouldn't if they did with the first gen. They'd be kidding themselves if they did that.

Can't wait to see the prices they would be without the contract.

Hmmm I bought my 1st gen iPhone 2 months ago for 250 ($500). However I am Uk based and my network doesn't even have EDGE let alone 3G and I couldn't afford it anyway. So this 3G model will be 100, I really hope that its impossible to secure without a contract and unlock, otherwise I just got PWNED. Someone reassure me this new model will never be sold without contract!

I have a question, will we be able to order it from apple.com or simply walk into an apple store and just walk out with it without a contract or anything? or it will have to be a 2-year agreement with at&t and THEN you get the 8 gb for 199 n 16 for 299?

Everything so far states you will need to sign a contract when you buy the phone, its designed to make you stay with ATT so they dont lose their subsidy.

Basically the iphone costs you 199/299 out of pocket, 3g costs 10 more per month for 24 months. Thats 240 that ATT keeps per phone sold and not unlocked.

There is already an answer. You can't. The 199/299 cost is with a contract and it's the ONLY one to buy a new iPhone.

I'm a helpful jerk, fear me.
