Thread: UniAW7

  1. #1361
Just deleted a ton of crap off my phone... Deleted everything in cydia I deemed to be non essential to me, and tons of AppStore apps... and for the first time ever, I activated the UniAW7 iWidget (6+) without an involuntary respring right when it came on. Going to run it the rest of the day and see what happens.

    EDIT:
I am able to trigger the respring consistently by activating the future day forecast by tapping on the day in the 5 day forecast. This causes it to respring every single time I do it.

don't know if this helps, just trying to find specific things that cause resprings. Let me know if you want me to stop testing... Don't want to 'bug' you

iPhone 6 Plus users would also be advised to not use TimedWalls, stick with weatherwalls.

Thanks, OrangeFred! Good reports. But the problem is with the Apple software/firmware engineers - not really a failure of hardware at all. There is a massive RAM leak in 8.1 firmware itself. BUT - each 8.1 firmware is built different for each different phone type. The 6+ does more RAM intensive things than a 5/5S or a 6 does. Therefore the 8.1 RAM leak (Apple admitted to in their release notes for 8.1.1) is making the 6+ less tolerant to WebView animation.

Even less respringing happens on a 5/5S than on the 6.. since each of those phones does less ram intensive things than 6+. It's all very logical albeit terribly frustrating for 6+ owners.

But all is not lost.. All you 6+ guys/gals need is a jailbreak for 8.1.1 and you'll get your animations back since the webkit ram leak is fixed in 8.1.1.

Another point: With the ram leak in 8.1... Even 2Gb of RAM would NOT have prevented all 6+ respring issues.. .. 8.1.1 will solve most 6+ respring issues if not all. But 3 of 7 Pangu exploits were closed in 8.1.1... Booo..

    ^^ All speculation.

I'm sure everybody thought 8.1 was going to fix all 8.0's issues!

I think Samsung put a double agent in Apple and he's doing a good job sabotaging things (notice I said "I think")

Better you said something like this, doesn't make it sound like you think you know everything so much:

I will disable that feature in my stand-alone 6Plus version (when I get around to doing it).

Who said anything about a RAM leak? I really don't think iOS 8 has a RAM leak. If it was an issue with the firmware, it would most likely affect all devices.

Ian is right, it's all speculation and anyone speaking on this with certainty is being foolish.

I would rather people discuss instability that is not related to animations. For instance, I get random resprings without any animations. Now discussing and comparing this issue can yield some results as opposed to wild speculation that just makes people chase an invisible problem.

As I have been testing it all day I will share my findings...

I can only assume these are the causes as they have been the last things that happen immediately prior to a respring. Maybe it will be useful, maybe not.

    1. I have triggered more resprings by using the home button to exit safari then I have by every other one below I have found combined. If I hit the home button to exit safari while a page is loading I get a respring 30%-40% of the time. I have triggered resprings hitting the home button to exit safari without a page loading, but that is much less frequent. (Thanks Marty for pointing me to Safari. He found this first)

    2. I had 2 resprings occur while double pressing the home button to enter multitasking.

    3. I had 1 respring when the iPhone was in "sleep" and I flipped the silent switch to ring. Came out of sleep right to the apple logo and a respring.

I have not triggered a respring doing anything else on my iPhone today. I was running the stock UniAW7 iWidget shared by Dacal, and the only customization I made in the config settings was to choose the icon pack. I also have not entered safe mode at all.

Because when your browsing, webkit keeps the webpage in memory, it also stores all your browsers history & this includes images too, try deleting your history & if you can, clear the cache too, sorry I've never done it so don't know how!

Now don't use Safari again & never press your home button. LOL..

It has been documented & admitted by Apple Kirma, massive memory leak in Webkit IOS8.1 Supposedly fixed in 8.1.1.

Yeah I read that but I think that's different than a RAM leak, right? The Webkit issues that Apple mentioned were for browsing web pages using mostly Safari. That's what I understand of it anyway.

This actually made me laugh out loud.

Would this pertain to all web browsers or just safari? I don't understand this stuff yet, but I'm trying, and curious if another browser could help, or hurt, as I just realized I haven't emptied my browser history on my phone ever. Haha.

Webkit is used in Safari & I think Google Chrome, thats all I know.

Yes, different things, but I also heard something about the actual RAM being not good and Apple gonna change supplier or something, can't remember really.

Apple's release notes for 8.1.1 referred to a Massive WebKit Memory leak. RAM leak and Memory leak are the same thing per my understanding. Happy to admit error if someone can share the contrary facts.

Wasn't speculating this time. Just using logic based in the facts available. I also explained why the memory leak in the WebKit function of the firmware, which is indeed on all phones on iOS 8.1, would cause a critical issue on 6+ that wouldn't be the case on other phones even though present. It's a page back.

There's a difference, gents, between 'speculating' and making logical conclusions based on facts from Apple. 😉 Don't ya think?

Ian's right to point out that my saying "6+ guys problems will all be solved in 8.1.1 after a JB".. Indeed that is speculation.. But still logical to conclude that if the WebKit memory/RAM leak is fixed in 8.1.1 6+ would fare better with animation. WebKit isn't only used with Safari. But it's being used for any on screen html running.

Simon also noted that one of his main uses is lots of tabs in Safari. And that that could possibly be the reason why he resprings more on his 6 where many of the rest of us 6 users get very little respringing not opening as many tabs in mobile safari.

Whatever the issue.. it's maddening for the 6+ guys. But Apple made clear the "massive WebKit memory (RAM) leak".. Their words.

It's also logical to conclude that the instability of 6+ has nothing at all to do with the jailbreak itself. And the poor jailbreak is getting a lot of blame. From my experience and anecdotal evidence collected so far - the Pangu JB doesn't deserve it. This JB is way more stable than the first six weeks of iOS 7. And for all practical purposes right now, for me and many others, is as stable as 7 IS now.

WebKit is a HTML/CSS web browser rendering engine for Safari/Chrome. It uses RAM like everything else does, if it's leaking RAM it will use more.. & more..

This is my understanding, but could be completely wrong!

the main reason for jailbreaking is UNIAW and the great team around it.

So there is a functioning jailbreak --> i want UNIAW and not any compromise at all.

    Hail the UNIAW

@Ian, if it's a Ram leak that is triggered when anything renders the WebKit engine than why don't I get a respring when I use ifile to view UNIAW7?

That's why I'm not convinced it's solely this issue because if that rendering engine exist in the OS, then it should affect all devices, right?
