Default Office for iPad Already Nearing 30 Million Downloads

Fewer than eight weeks ago, Microsoft took the wraps off of the long-awaited Office suite for iPad. In that short period of time, Microsoft has found immense success in the land of iPad.

Microsoft says the app has been downloaded some 27 million times, rapidly attaining a level not expected to be achieved for a substantially longer period of time.

Microsoft's Julia White confirmed the app's huge success during Monday's keynote at the TechEd customer conference in Houston, Texas. White serves as general manager of Microsoft's Office Division.

Microsoft still requires users to hunker down their cash for an in-app subscription if they want to unlock and utilize all the bells and whistles offered by the software. Office for iPad, however, is still a freemium app because users can access/view documents at no charge.

I deleted mine after I found out that it's subscription based. I'm sure majority of the 27million who downloaded the app did that as well.

It's one of the lowest rated apps in the store

Ooh, millions downloaded it! How many are actually using it, and how many subscriptions were subsequently garnered form the free (useless) version?

    +1

I downloaded Excel and Powerpoint to use with email attachments and for work but ran into the subscription nonsense if I needed to make a change & send it back -- DELETE!
Unless work is going to buy a subscription, this is useless. And my employer has their own internal cloud service, storage and email -- they'd never pay for MS's.

You guys are funny. Why would you expect this to be free? What advantage would Microsoft have to spend the resources developing the app for iOS if they weren't going to profit from it?

You're missing the point here. We're not (well, I'm not) asking for free apps. The idea is to charge once for it, not an exorbitant amount every single year. The best I've seen is $70 a year. That's absurd! Charge $5 or $10 for a single app, and, say, $40 for the suite. Then, I think they'd gain more profit and customer goodwill. I will never pay annually for these types of software, same goes for photoshop.
