Default WSJ: Retina Display-Toting iPad Mini Set to Launch in 4Q 2013

After citing unnamed sources, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple is getting ready for mass production of a next-generation Retina display-toting iPad mini which is set to launch in the fourth quarter. According to the sources, Apple is working with Asian suppliers with the “high-resolution retina display” being sourced from rival manufacturer Samsung, as well as other screen makers.

The publication stated that component makers were told that Apple had originally planned to use displays from Sharp and LG Display but Samsung was added to the supplier list to ensure adequate supply of the alleged next-gen tablet would be met. As of right now LG and AU Optronics supply the non-Retina panels currently found in the existing iPad mini.

Although details on the supposed device appear to be slim, the second-generation mini is said to carry over a similar form factor from its current model. Apple is however said to be contemplating a variety of color offerings for the back covers, which as of right now are only available in black and silver. Sources said to expect the new 7.9-inch device sometime in the fourth quarter of 2013.

For those of you who have been eagerly awaiting some news, you already know that rumors regarding a possible “iPad mini 2” have been floating around for quite some time. Many of them seem to agree with the WSJ’s fourth quarter debut while others are claiming that a release won’t be made until sometime in 2014. There have even been some rumors which point to two iterations of the next-gen tablet, which consist of one non-Retina model and one Retina model.

Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see which of these rumors turn out to be true and which don’t by waiting for more concrete evidence.

Well, I trust the sources in iOS 7 more than the WSJ. However only time will tell.
