Thread: Urgently need some help JB 3GS been rather stupid!

  1. #1
    Hi All,

My wife's 3GS was previously JB and been working fine. She got a new iPhone 5 today so I wanted her old 3GS. I stupidly reset everything on the phone connected it to iTunes and it updated the software. Now I'm left with a phone which won't activate on the network as it's obviously not compatible with the sim card (EE) I've put in it.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do?

    Cheers
    Daz

Phone is now a brick. Won't even power on!

The device won't power on at all (not even a silver Apple logo), and your computer isn't recognizing a USB device (i.e., your phone) is plugged in? Oh dear. If that's the case, your device may be totally buggered... However, if we can get to either a silver Apple logo or recognized by the iTunes computer as connected (even if it complains about "Recovery Mode"), we can work with that.

I'm willing to try anything. Completely black screen. Device not recognised on any PC. It's almost like someone pulled the battery out (it's been on a charger all last night). What can I do Orby?

Well I somehow managed to get her to boot back up. She wanted me to set her up as a new phone but it is carrier locked so I need to JB her. I tried using Snowbreeze but when I get to the part of restoring the custom IPSW created iTunes gives me error 3194. What can I do?

Default Error 3194 in iTunes trying to restore to 6.1.2
    Hi All,

I'm using iTunes v11.1 and am trying to get my 3GS to 6.1.2 using the shift-restore method. After a few seconds iTunes reports error 3194. I've removed any reference to gs.apple.com in the hosts file but still no joy. I'm trying to go from 4.1 to 6.1.2 to use evasi0n.

    Any advice?

    Regards
    Daz

First you need to find out what bootrom 3GS you have (idetector can tell you this) and what shsh you have (tiny umbrella or iFaith can help with this).

As an update I have just downgraded my modem firmware to 05.13.04 and I now have an unlock but I'm on 4.1 and want to upgrade to 6.1.2 or 6.1.3. Is that possible whilst retaining the modem firmware, etc?

You have to build a custom firmware.

    Is there a guide somewhere?

Bootrom and shsh. You aren't going anywhere without finding that information first.

What's confusing me is is there a difference between a firmware update and modem firmware? In other words does the 6.1.2 firmware update include the modem update? I've saved my 4.1 SHSH blobs using Tiny Umbrella. I've downloaded 6.1.2 firmware (which surprisingly doesn't open in Redsn0w 0.9.6rc19 but does in 0.9.15b3) and now need to know what to do.

From that reply I guess I'm stuck on 4.1 then!

Dude. I don't know how I can say this any differently.

1: You have to find out what bootrom you have. Use idetector to find this out. It will be new or old.

2: Use tiny umbrella, plug in phone, click advanced, select box that says save SHSH from cydia then press save SHSH and see what SHSH you get.

Find out these two things and I can tell you exactly what your options are.

Thanks Simon. I have the new bootrom and done the save shsh from cydia. Not sure what you want me to tell you apart from the fact that the saved shsh filename ends iphone2,1-5.1.1

Ok, we are getting somewhere now. New bootrom and you have 5.1.1 SHSH. Is that the only SHSH that tiny umbrella was able to save?
If so then you can go to 5.1.1 and still jailbreak and unlock using snowbreeze or redsnow to make a custom 5.1.1 firmware with your 5.1.1 SHSH stitched to the firmware. It will not update your modem firmware doing this so ultrasnow will still work to unlock.

You will need to downgrade your itunes version first too to 11.0.2 or lower since itunes 11.1 blocks custom firmware restores.

So how do I get to 5.1.1?

Am I not better paying Orange their 20.42 to issue a carrier unlock and then I can update without problem with iTunes. I'm not really interested in jailbreaking anyway!

Sure you can. If they officially unlock it for you all you do is plug into itunes and update to 6.1.3.

They won't unlock it as I'm not an existing customer despite offering to pay for it! Who do I turn to?
