Default iPhone 3GS totally bricked/dead after trying to update OS
    Hi,

My iPhone 3GS with OS 3.1.2 was jailbroken about 1.5 years ago. After that I haven't further updated nor did I use iTunes (whole program was gone due to new PC). Yesterday I decided to update to OS 4.3.3 but I was too lazy to do research. I just installed latest iTunes 10.4.08 and hoped everything would go smoothly. I didn't un-jailbreak it first. Apparently I was wrong.

The initial iTunes automatic way didn't work as it complained something was corrupted or not recognized. It didn't proceed further however; the phone still works.

I then googled a bit and learned the DFU mode. I could enter DFU mode but still it didn't proceed with my downloaded 4.3.3 file due to other errors but phone still works. After some trials I decided to erase all data and use DFU mode to install 3.1.3 file first (thought 3.1.2 to 4.3.3 is too big step). Now the phone is totally dead. There is no sign of power though the battery was still ok before it went dead, nor can I enter DFU/Recovery mode no matter how many secs I pressed and released power/home buttons, etc.

I know I've done something horribly wrong. I probably should have restored the phone to non-jailbroken state first, and then upgrade OS and then jailbreak again. Is there anyway I can still revive it? How can I confirm it's completely bricked? Is changing logic board a last option?

Many thanks for being patient to read through my story!

I don't think your iPhone is bricked. You must have 4.3.3shsh blob to restore to 4.3.3. The current firmware is now 4.3.5.

thanks for quick reply. though I don't know what is 4.3.3 shsh blob (I am totally outdated) but I will google and learn. However my phone doesn't show any sign of power no matter what button I pressed and no matter how long I pressed, whether it's USB connected or not.... would 4.3.3 shsh blob work without powering up my phone first? Thanks.

Alright, if unlock is not important restore to the latest to get your iPhone up and then downgrade to 4.3.3 with your blob. Do that now, once you have upgraded to 4.3.5 , then run tiny umbrella and save shsh to see your blob.

how do I restore to the latest if I cannot power up the device standalone or with USB/DFU/Recovery (always black screen)? PC simply does not detect USB device. Am I missing something?

Does iTunes not detect your iPhone

Can you try to trigger it into recovery mode or until iTunes detects it.

No, it is not bricked. Worst scenario is to remove battery and put it back, don't have to do it now.
Do you have a different computer?

I actually directly opened it and unplugged and re-plugged the battery connector. Now there is sign of life as LCD back light is on and it gets stuck at Apple logo.

Next is to see if iTunes can detect it.

I did and after extracting software info it stopped with error 3194

I use another PC and install iTunes from scratch. Now the restore process goes much further until when it was updating Firmware halfway, it stopped at error 37.

Error 3194 is because iTunes couldn't verify your shsh blob.
Put iPhone into dfu mode and downgrade back to 4.1, use exit recovery to kick out error 1015, jailbreak with Limerain and run redsnow again just to install iPad baseband to be unlocked by ultrasn0w.

Thanks bro! it works now!!! it's now 4.1 jailbroken with iPad baseband.
One last question though. How can I update to 4.3.3? If it's too complicated or risky I am happy with 4.1.
