Thread: Jailbreak 3.1.2 iPhone 3G

  1. #1
    Default Jailbreak 3.1.2 iPhone 3G
I want to get wifi tethering for an iPhone 3G but I am not sure if jailbreaking it will do anything to the baseband.

If there is a way to tether wifi without jailbreaking the iPhone please let me know.

If jailbreaking is the only method please explain how to do it so I won't mess anything up as it isn't my iPhone. I have a pretty basic understanding of iPod jailbreaks not iPhone.

I'd recommend jailbreaking for many many reasons, if you explore you'll find out.

Redsn0w 0.9.3 is the tool you want. If you are on official carrier, jailbreakme will do fine.

Stay on 3.1.2, as long as you don't update to 4.1, your baseband will not be updated. 3.1.2 is more ideal for the iPhone 3G anyway.

I have a jailbroken iPod touch 3G 3.1.3 and I love jailbreak. But as the iPhone isn't mine I don't want to mess it up in anyway. It is on official carrier.

If I jailbreak what do I have to do to get wifi tethering working.

The best tethering experience, I find is with MyWi, which is a paid app (really worth it tho) with a jailbroken device. That's my opinion. As for tethering without jb, I don't know how that goes. I believe there are additional charges as well for non-jb tethering. I could be wrong.

If the iPhone is on official carrier, in the Safari browser go to jailbreakme.com and follow the instructions. It's fast and easy. I've done 3 iPhones this way. If anyone else has any input on tethering without jb, I'd welcome that input. But my personal opinion, MyWi which turns the phone into a wireless hotspot (and does it very well) is an amazing app worth buying.

Well, it requires a jailbroken device, so from Cydia

    Okay I see

Another question I have is that when I used TU to get the shsh for my iPod I could only get 4.1 firmware. But the iPhone that never had anything to do with jailbreak can get
    4.0 4.0.1 4.0.2 4.1
    fimware. What's the deal?

The owner of the phone saved the SHSHs before when Apple was still signing 4.0. You didn't save them till now, that's why you only get 4.1 because that's the only firmware Apple is currently signing.

It doesn't need to be jailbroken to save SHSHs

That's the point he didn't save any shsh's of the iPhone, because he didn't know anything about jailbreak or shsh.

I think tu is just hatin one me :/

TU isn't hating, it can only get shsh's for the firmware that apple is signing as Annie said in the previous post, as to why it was able to get them for the phone from 4.0 - 4.1 it could be an error of some sort, once you jailbreak cydia's homepage will list available shsh's, if it lists all the ones that TU said it saved then they are there somehow or another

Ok few questions to your guide saradalton.
First, how do I create an ad-hoc network?
Second, I have read that once you set up tethering, the iPhone can't be turned off. Otherwise it loses the tether and you have to re-do the whole process.
Anniex, if I use Redsnow to jailbreak will it do anything to the iPhone? I have read that some jailbreaks upgrade the speed or allow it to work faster. And if I jailbreak with jailbreakme.com I have read that it causes some problems with future firmware jailbreaks. I just need some clarifications for those questions and I'll be set if no other problems arise.

Jailbreakme only causes an obstacle for the iPhone 3GS (and some of the iPod Touch devices). iPhone 3G won't be affected by it.

    Good to know.
Now if I could get my first 2 questions answered that would be great.

    Your 1st Q: Any way to tether w/o jb'ing?
    A: Ask you carrier

Your 2nd Q: Is jb'ing the only way?
A: No. Re-read the above posts

My two cents: like AnnieX said, just use Jailbreakme. Since ur on 3.1.x, don't worry about upgrading since 4.x sux with a 3G anyways! Get MyWi....it's the best tether app out there. It turns your phone into a wifi hotspot! Plus u can transfer it to any phone you get (that's jailbroken)!

BTW, I thought SHSH files were irrelevant if one has a 3G...am I correct?

^Starting w/4.0, SHSH blobs are required for all devices. 2G and 3G don't need with <4.0

^For 2G and 3G phones --- SHSH blobs are NOT required for any firmware upgrade/downgrade if that version is less than 4.0.
