Default Please Clear Up the Noob's Confusion
First off, Hi guys. Been reading and listening for a couple weeks and I'm learning a lot. I'm still not getting it completely though so if you can help me verify what I think I know I'd appreciate it.

    I have a ip 3gs, new bootrom.
    Firmware 4.0.1
    Bootrom 359.3.2 (new right?)
    OS version 4.0 (8A293)
    Baseband 05.13.04

I used jailbreakme to jb and all was successful. I'm using itunes 9.2. After a week or so of "request pending" message in Cydia it finally says shsh: ios4.1. So here is the question, do I understand the following correctly:

Since apple is no longer signing ios 4.0, Cydia saved my device specific blobs with the currently valid 4.1 version. And if that is right and since there is not yet a jb for 4.1 my current jb is not safe (backed up). But, once a jb for 4.1 is out I will in fact have a backup blob for my device even if apple is at 4.2 or something by that time. Also, I have saved my 4.1 blob locally using tinyumbrella.

So am I getting this right? Or, is this just another case of having just enough knowledge to be dangerous

Oh, one other thing...what's the diff between Firmware (4.0.1) and iOS version (4.0). The versions being so close confuses me, lol. Hope the questions aren't too dumb. Thanks for the help and a great web site.

Ahh, one more "OH!"...I should stay with iTunes 9.2 and not let it update ANYTHING right?

you will always be able to downgrade to 4.1 now and the difference of 4.0 and 4.0.1 is the signal bars.. its supposed to be a new signal formula or however apple said it lol

and as far as itunes i would stay with 9.2 but 10 is safe for jailbreak and unlock

I suggest now you are at 4.0.1 jailbroken. You should install only the minimum apps to avoid crashing of Cydia. If this happens , you cannot restore to 4.0.1 anymore, so be real careful.

^Ditto. Be careful! Once your phone crashes or gets stuck at the boot logo, a restore is almost always necessary and that will mess up your chances of restoring to anything but 4.1. Avoid messing around with your system files like deleting stuff. I see a lot of people getting their phones stuck at the boot logo cuz they were deleting things...

Ssh into your iphone and use Winscp to copy the Springboard.plist file, it is located in LaunchDaemons folder. If you made a mistake , atleast you can fall back.

Yep. Assuming you'll still be able to SSH into the phone if it crashes or is stuck on the boot logo. Speaking of which, Yeow, just wondering: why is it that when my old iPhone got stuck in a boot loop that I couldn't SSH into the device to repair the .plist to kick it out of the loop (on Windows Vista) but when I used to have access to a Mac, I could Cyberduck SSH into the device to fix it?

I can't figure out any explanation except a Mac is better than a PC -.-

Ah, good advice. I'll be careful for sure. I depend on this phone so I'm not inclined to be too bold anyway. And, I stick with the more reliable repositories. I'll start searching/learning about ssh and follow your advice. Thanks.

@silent six, Thanks. What I meant though was, are the statements firmware 4.0.1 and iOS 4.0 saying/describing the same thing? Or are they two different things...So much to learn...

@ Anniex423 I'm probably not going to be messing with system files/folders, but can just installing the wrong app screw things up? It's not always clear from the descriptions whether something will work or not until you try it. For example, Cydgets don't work for me. Is there any "must haves" you or anyone else would like to suggest? ... And, Thanks for the hug, I've been traveling so I needed one

@everyone Thanks for the help and warm welcome.

Basics? SBSettings, Unlimtones, My3G, Winterboard, Cydelete, iBlacklist, so many lol. Some of these are paid apps tho but I like them a lot. There's a ton more I could recommend but I can't remember cuz I haven't been able to jailbreak for 3 weeks now haha.

Thanks Annie. Already had Winterboard. SBSettings is awesome. My phone syncs automagically with my car and I always hated having to go through multiple steps every time I got in to drive...No more though. Unlimtones and cydelete...Yeeesss!
