If you want to jailbreak and/or unlock then no it's not safe.

If you have 4.0.1, then no because you will lose your jailbreak. If you have 4.0.2, it's fine as long as you don't need an unlock since you can't jailbreak 4.0.2 or 4.1 at the moment.

If you do need an unlock at some point, you can upgrade while running tiny umbrella. It will let you update to 4.1 without updating the baseband (which is currently unlockable, whenever the JB comes out).

If you are using custom firmware to go to 4.1 then it's going to keep your jailbreak/unlock.

In this instance, it would be "safe"
