Thread: Want to upgrade to 4.0.1 or 4.0!

Default Want to upgrade to 4.0.1 or 4.0!
I have a 3.1.2 iPhone 3GS with AT&T. I want to really update to 4.0 or 4.0.1 after seeing the new functionality.

My iPhone is a jailbroken straight from blackra1n and never saw a need to use a different method until now. It is tethered meaning if my iPhone runs out of battery or it gets shutoff I have to connect to PC and run blackra1n. I'm not sure if tethered means that.

What are my options and will it be tethered/untethered, any other stuff I need to know?

Thanks for the help in advance!

I'm also a noob so please use easy instructions and less "codenames."

    Appreciate the help!

You're going to need your SHSH files saved to go to 4.0.1. Download tinyumbrella, go to advanced options and try to get 4.0.1 from cydia. If it's there, then start the TSS server and do a shift+restore in itunes with a genuine 4.0.1 firmware from apple. Once jailbroken you can have an untethered jailbreak with jailbreakme.com

Of course, if all that is too much trouble, or you don't have SHSH files saved, then uninstall blackrain and install spirit from Spirit, this will be an untethered jailbreak.

Will I still be able to have contacts/music/third party apps if I restore correctly?

  5. #4
Sure you will, after the restore, itunes will ask if you want to set up as a new phone or restore from backup - do a restore from backup and all your old stuff will be dropped onto it.

You can use itunes/store like normal just don't do any further software updates it suggests.

    I'll be here'

One more thing, while doing the restore you should get an error message. Don't worry, just use the "kick device out of restore" button in tiny umbrella when it happens.

09/19/2010 08:56:57.524 SHSH SUCCESSFULLY saved! [Click Here to Open] 09/19/2010 08:56:57.538 You have saved your SHSH locally and the request was sent to CYDIA. This means that CYDIA DOES have your SHSH. Do NOT bug semaphore about the Cydia home page showing this version. 09/19/2010 08:56:57.554 Caching shsh files... 09/19/2010 08:56:57.566 Found [1] shsh files to cache... 09/19/2010 08:56:57.578 Cached [1] shsh files

    Now I'm on Step 3

    EDIT:
Do I have to open the SHSH?

    Okay Here:
09/19/2010 08:57:49.814 TSS Server Started! 09/19/2010 08:57:49.819 TSS Accepting connections... 09/19/2010 08:57:49.825 Killing iTunes... Restart it to restore your device...

Now, do I manually start iTunes or should it come itself and I should let TSS server running in the background?

That worked, move onto the restore. Start the TSS server first, then start tunes. Hold shift and click restore (on a pc)

    Start iTunes manually

Ok, follow instructions as per above and pm.

Note comment above, you will get an error message during restore, just use the "kick device out of recovery" button

Put your device into DFU mode (not recovery mode).

Connect your iPhone to your computer.
    Turn iPhone off.
    Start iTunes.
Hold Power and Home buttons together for 10 seconds or so.
Release Power button but keep holding the Home button until your computer recognizes a new USB device.
iTunes will now recognize your iPhone.

    Then try the restore again

    Same error 3014

Does anything show on the screen when you've got it in DFU? *Screen should be blank. *Are you sure the TSS server is running and that you've got the right firmware for 3GS?
