    Start all over again.
    Download tiny Umbrella version 4.1.4,
    Plug in your bootable 3Gs
    Click Advanced option
    Device/Version select 3GS 4.0.1 shsh file
    Request from : Cydia
    Click Save Shsh
Wait for answer, if it it says restoring to this OS will succeed.
Then Double check , Click Display shsh to see if it is there.
You have to add this line to your hosts file
    127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
and the rest comment out with this #
    Start Tss Server
Do the Shift + Restore to 4.0, make sure under Device/Version 4.0 shsh is also selected.
Let it restore and let us know if it works.

If the restore doesn't work, the verification is not going through the local server but you have 4.0 shsh file according to Tiny Umbrella. Then point to Cydia to do the restore.

This is what you do :
In your hosts file add this line to the very bottom
    74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
and the rest comment out with this #
    save it and reboot.
    Put Iphone into DFU mode
Now do the Shift + Restore to 4.0 ipsw.

Hey thanks guys, I am going to try it tonight and I will let you know, thanks for taking the time to type that out. Keep you guys posted!

I was reading these directions and you said I have to add a line to my host files. Do I do that though tss server or tiny umbrella or? Sorry. Here's what I have going for me just to recap:

I have a 3gs MC model (New bootrom)
    I jailbroke using Spirit 3.1.3
    Cydia tells me that I have SHSH iOS: 3.1.3, 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2

I wasn't sure what you mean by this part of the directions, any clarifaction would be great, thanks again guys!

    What does that mean?'

If you start Tss Server, it will put it there, if it is already there, don't worry about it, just run the server and do the restore.

The # sign, means you are asking the hosts file to ignore the line.

You can sync back your Contacts in Itunes if you have your Contacts stored in Outlook, Google contacts , Yahoo contacts or yahoo address book.
Just highlight info in Itunes, you will see it there.
