Not if you are restoring to the most current firmware. Unless you are trying to preserve your baseband.

Yup. You dont need tiny umbrella to restore to the most current firmware.

Ok. After trying it without tiny umbrella its showing me error 3194. Im doing the shift+restore. If i do just restore without the shift optipn, will it stay at 5.0?

    Open tiny umbrella
    Click on advanced
deselect the box that says "set hosts to cydia on exit"
Close tiny umbrella and proceed with the restore

Thanks man. It worked. The reason i wanted to restore is cuz i bought this phone of someone and i dont know who the original carrier is. Since it has an unlockable baseband i realyy cant do anything with it at the moment. I jailbroke it,but then i couldnt go to the carriers and try out their sims cuz it was tethered and it needed to be rebooted to pick up signal

And i couldnt try my sim cuz its not microsim

You didnt mention you needed to unlock it. Was it on 5.0 already when you got it?

  8. #1068
Yea, it was already on 5.0.

In that case only the carrier it is locked to can unlock it.

so i went to 5.0 from 4.2.1 then back down to 4.2.1 b/c it destroyed my battery on 3gs new bootrom. I am kinda confused, I have read that with 5.0 and beyond, once a newer version comes out we can't just shift restore to 5.0 when 5.0.1 exists?

i know currently 5.0 is still signed, but when 5.0.1 becomes standard and 5.0 is not signed, can i still go only to 5.0 for the untether jb?

As of right now no. You would have to go to 5.0 while it is still being signed.

I have 4.3.3 and i want to upgrade to 5.0 using stock firmware but it gives me error 11. Does that means Apple has stopped signing it and I can never put 5.0 on? only the latest version?
I really need a JB so shld i just restore to 4.3.3 and stay there?
How do we know for sure if Apple stopped signing?
    Thanks

    You have latest itunes installed?

You also have to restore to 5.0. A update will not work.

  17. #1077
Yes. As of now, i dont think its possible anymore to restore to iOS 5....

Error 11 is not SHSH/Signing related. AFAIK Apple is still signing 5.0. Try redownloading a copy of 5.0 and try restore to that.

You are on official carrier right?

  19. #1079
what does that mean, official carrier?
I downloaded the copy from here. Should I redownload?

    Is the phone locked/unlocked?

    And yes, try redownloading.
