Well check in cydia to make sure before you try to upgrade

I'm in the same boat. Have 3.1.3 and want to go to 4.0.1 but I want to make sure I do it correctly. I was too busy last week to get 4.0.1 directly from Apple so now I'd like to get it and not .2 so I can still JB.

Like I've said in this thread and alot of others, check if you got your blobs saved, if you have then you can upgrade

Well all you need to do is download the firmware from here, get tinyumbrella or edit your host file so it reads from cydia's then shift+click restore in iTunes and find the fw you downloaded, after you have upgraded and activated your iPhone, set it up as a new phone in iTunes, then sync, backup and jailbreak it

Okay. However I'm still unsure about having to put the phone in DFU or not.

Also I saw a thread last night that mentioned where to get your bookmarks, MMS and call history, etc in SSH but now I can't remember where it is.

I'm pretty sure google would help with that, and you shouldn't have to put it into DFU mode, but again there's alot of places to find out how

Yeah there's lot of info out there about downgrading but almost nothing that I can find about upgrading but not to the latest firmware that's currently out.

There's I thread that I've been replying to, where I explain how to upgrade, just look down from this 1, starts with [3GS]

I'm in the same situation but the iphone 3Gs is not jailbroken. I intend to jb using spirit which wil get me SHSH on Cydia then I an upgrade to 4.0 by pointing to Cydia servers and then use jailbreak me. Conceptually that should all work....or I can use TinyUmbrella, you can do the same I believe.

I believe you can use TinyUmbrella to get SHSH's to Cydia without being JB. Search online for a blog called "Firmware Umbrella"

4.0.1 is still being signed by Apple so use TinyUmbrella to store your SHSHs NOW!
