Default Can I jailbreak a 3GS on ios4 thats never been jailbroken?
I have an old iphone 3GS on the old bootrom that has never been jailbroken. It is currently running ios4. I would like to jailbreak it. Is it possible? I am reading on a whole bunch of threads that the phone has to have been jb'd before in order to use sn0wbreeze or pwnagetool.

I just created a custom ipsw with sn0wbreeze but I am afraid to install on on my phone.

Updating the firmware does not update the bootrom. It updates the os and the baseband.

However Simtech is correct. If you are on 4.0 and the phone has never been jailbroken before, you won't be able to jailbreak until a new jailbreak is released for 4.0
