Default Jailbreak upgrade from 3.0 to 4.01
I'm sure that most everyone has already upgraded from 3.0 to 3.1.2, 3.1.3 and on to 4.0 by now but I was holding out due to wanting to keep the tethering I had enabled in 3.0. Can I go straight to 4.0 or do I have to upgrade in steps in order to keep the phone jailbroken?

    Hints, helps and advice appreciated.

You can go straight to 4.0 but you will have to rejailbreak your phone. Just follow this guide. How to Jailbreak 4.0 iPhone 3G/iPod Touch 2g on OS X/Windows
Have they released the jailbreak in the app store yet?

Which iPhone do you have? The various JB methods depend on that.

Yeah its a 3G (A1241) running 3.0 (7A341). I'm hoping it doesn't run slow like some of the threads I've read.

Nope it didn't take. It looked like it was going to work but it rebooted back to 3.0.

Sorry I meant you need to update your phone regularly through itunes first to 4.0 and then jailbreak it. Make sure you sync your contacts and back up your pictures since going to 4.0 restores your phone.

Ok its jailbroken, but my Springboard keeps crashing. It says that the Mobile Substrate did not cause the problem. Wondering if winterboard is having issues. Anyone else run into this?

Did you enable multitasking and homescreen wallpaper when running redsn0w? Those may be the problem, lots of people with 3g phone have had problems with those two things enabled. You can simply re-run redsn0w and just UNCHECK "install cydia", "enable multitasking", and "enable homescreen wallpaper".

I'm going to try one at a time to see what is causing the problem. It appears that I had some cydia apps installed that did not carry over so that could be the problem. I've uninstalled some of them but there are others that don't appear in the list anymore. Worst case, I wipe the phone and start over without the AptBackup restore.

    Thanks

Also forgot to mention its always best when doing a major firmware upgrade like 3.x.x to 4.0 its much better to set up as new phone instead of restore from backup. Lots of old settings and junk will get carried over which can slow down the phone and kill your battery life.

I started to do that and I thought it'd be ok to restore from backup. If all else fails, I'll go that route, which should be soon.

Done! It appears that AptBackup restored some files (as well as iTunes restore) that were incompatable. Thanks for your assistance.
