Default Another Way to get to 4.0 for a 3Gs old bootrom?
I have a iPhone 3Gs, 3.1.2 iOS, old bootrom, 5.12.01 modem (from 3.1.3 but downgraded back to 3.1.2), SHSH on Cydia back to 3.1

Want to sell it on eBay but most people want me to get it to a jailbroken/unlocked iOS4.0.

I have been unsuccessful upgrading from 3.1.2 to custom 4.0 but thinking if I do a upgrade via iTunes to 4.0 (it will upgrade the modem but all modem is unlockable) then do a custom restore to pwned 4.0 image it will take. Do you think this would work?

no it won't work, it has to go from a pwned 3.x.x to accept a custom firmware, if you do an official update to 4.0 you will lose your pwn and have to restore back to 3.1.2 or lower and re-jailbreak with redsn0w or blackra1n

There must be something wrong, maybe I will try to upgrade to 4.0 using windows7 since I cant get iOS4 to take when I do it from iTunes on the Macbook, I just hang at the very, very end.

    Thanks

Custom 4.0 should work for you. What errors are you getting? When you shift-restore in iTunes, do it without putting the phone in any kind of mode. Just have it fully booted and sitting on the homescreen.

How did you jailbreak your 3.1.2? If by Spirit, you'll need to restore back to 3.1.2 and use blackra1n to jailbreak. Then restore to the custom firmware. There's a way to go directly from Spirit, but it's a little more complicated.
