Default how to update from 3.0.1 to 3.1.2
I have been searching for the answer to this problem for sometime
story goes my GF bought an iPhone never updated (sort of a good thing) but now she wants to use sms and a few other functions (BTW never been Jailbroken)

so i want to get her phone to 3.1.2
as of now itunes is pushing 3.1.3

I have been trying to use SHSH umbrella but ive failed so far to do it

    any suggestions would be awesome

    Thank you

Which iPhone? If it's the 3GS in your profile you might be able to update to a custom 3.1.3 firmware if you have the old bootrom.

Assuming it is the 3GS put your phone in DFU mode and open up the system profiler in OS X. Locate the iPhone and look for the iBoot version. If it's 359.3 you can use Snowbreeze to create a custom 3.1.3 firmware that will jailbreak your phone. From there you can also use blacksnow RC2 to unlock if that's needed.

If you don't need an unlock I believe you can just update to a stock 3.1.3 firmware and use Spirit to jailbreak it.

If it's not the old bootrom and you do need to unlock it I'm pretty sure you're out of luck for the next couple weeks until the 4G is launched and the Dev Team releases a new unlock.

Do you need an unlock? (Is she using an official carrier?)
If not, why not skip 3.1.2 completely and just jailbreak 3.1.3 with Spirit.

Upgrade to 3.1.3 using a custom firmware made with pwnagetool. It's a mac only program but your info says you have that so that shouldn't be a problem.

Here's a guide on how to do it: iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS Using PwnageTool [Mac]
