    Default Unable to restore 3.1.2
    Hello,

I have a 3Gs that was jailbroken and unlocked using blackra1n. I was having touch screen issues so I started the process of reinstalling 3.1.2.

I didn't know at the time that I couldn't use the 'Erase' function on the phone, therefore now I have a crashed phone.

I put the phone into recovery mode and attempted a iTunes manual restore using file:

    iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw

I get the "device isn't eligible for the selected build" window - even though my SHSHs are on file with Cydia and I properly changed etc/hosts on my computer.

Why would I be getting this error message?

    What should I do now?

    Thank you.

Do I need to downgrade iTunes? Which version of iTunes should I be using?

It all depends on when you backed up your SHSHs. If it was anytime after Feb 4th or 5th then what you have backed up are files for 3.1.3 not 3.1.2. That's why you can't restore to 3.1.2. The version of iTunes your using won't affect your ability to downgrade.

Then what can I do instead? I would really appreciate a link to a walk-through. I have already tried Google without any luck as I don't really know what to search for.

I've heard of Pwnage, but can't figure out if it can help me to restore the OS.

Much of what I'm finding on Google is outdated.

    Thank you.

Pwnagetool makes custom firmwares. If your phone can restore to those, that'd be prefered. If it can't, you could try this: Preventing baseband update as a last-ditch effort [iPhone Dev Team]

The link provided by dhamien is the only thing you can do to try to preserve your unlock

    Thank You!

PwnageTool worked great! I didn't expect it to be so easy as to why I was asking for directions.

    This tool is very cool.

I assume now I just go ahead with blackra1n to jailbreak and unlock?

If you installed a custom firmware made with pwnage tool your phone is already jailbroken. Install blacksn0w from cydia to unlock.

I figured that out! Thank you.

My iPhone seems to be restored - properly jailbroken and unlocked.

I am having a bit of trouble getting it hooked back up on the T-Mobile network. I've got the T-Mobile carrier bundle installed and the correct APN's but still no service.

I'll take it down to my local T-Mobile store to swap out the sim - unless someone here has some other advice.

(I had heard that taking the sim out, putting it into a T-mobile phone then back into the iphone is what I may have to do.)

Did you turn off 3G? I believe you need to do that when using t-mobile. Not too sure though as I don't unlock myself.

The firmware you made or downloaded also needs to be activated, but I guess that was done correctly, otherwise your phone wouldn't be working.

I figured it out. I had to use blacksn0w instead of ultrasn0w because my baseband is the current version. So my phone was not unlocked properly.

Ah yes, that would cause the problem =) did you install blacksn0w RC2? If not, you should consider removing the original blacksn0w and installing the new one. The old one can cause wifi and boot loop problems.

To get RC2, read more here: Pushfix 2.0 • View topic - Blacksn0w RC2 Final
