Default What is different about an unlocked Iphone from Apple
I have seen unlocked Iphones for sale directly from retailers like Tiger Direct; They sell for around 1000 US dollars. What is different about these iphones and why can't the firmware on these factory unlocked iphones be copied and put on an iphone that is branded to Att so that we never have to worry about an update locking our phone again?

Maybe it checks a server and verifies that it should indeed be unlocked?

That must be, but you would think someone would have figured out how to get all iphones to work that way.

Well maybe it's a hardware unlock. And that would required to open up every device.
